Howdy! I'm Cody, and I've been programming since high school. I first got interested in software by programming motor controllers for robotics projects and building my own websites. That passion eventually led me to earn a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from Montana State University, where I graduated with a 4.0 GPA. Throughout college, I loved helping other students understand programming concepts and work through challenging projects. Today, I work full-time as a software engineer, where I build software professionally while continuing to create personal projects in my free time.

I have experience in both frontend and backend development, and I've built and deployed complete web apps from scratch. I'm comfortable working with things like Python, Go, Java, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, React, SQL, Git, Linux, data structures, algorithms, and other computer science concepts.

My goal as a tutor is to help students become confident, independent problem solvers rather than simply giving them answers. I like to break difficult concepts into smaller, manageable pieces and adapt my explanations to each student's learning style. I encourage questions, focus on building strong fundamentals, and guide students through the reasoning process so they can apply what they've learned to future problems. Programming can feel overwhelming at times, but one of my college professors always said, "None of this is magic—it's all just code. If I can figure this out, so can you!" That mindset has stayed with me, and I believe that with patience, practice, and the right guidance, anyone can learn to program successfully.

Whether you need help debugging an assignment, understanding object-oriented programming, mastering data structures and algorithms, learning web development, or preparing for a computer science course, I'd be happy to help. I look forward to working with you!

Computer Programming

Computer Programming

Whether you're learning your first programming language or debugging a frustrating assignment, I'm here to help. I have professional experience developing software and enjoy helping students understand programming fundamentals rather than just finding the answer. I can help with debugging, object-oriented programming, data structures, algorithms, and general software development.
Computer Science

Computer Science

I graduated from Montana State University with a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science and a 4.0 GPA. During college, I frequently helped classmates work through difficult concepts and programming assignments. I'm happy to help with a wide variety of computer science topics, such as data structures, algorithms, object-oriented programming, software engineering concepts, networking, cybersecurity, and more! Feel free to reach out with a specific topic and see if I can help!
CSS

CSS

I have experience building modern web applications and working with CSS to create responsive, user-friendly interfaces. I can help students learn CSS fundamentals including selectors, the box model, layouts, Flexbox, Grid, responsive design, and debugging styling issues. Whether you're building your first website, working through a web development course, or trying to understand why your styles aren't behaving as expected, I can help you build confidence with CSS.
Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity

I have a strong foundation in cybersecurity through my Computer Science degree and Security+ certification. I can help students understand core security concepts including networking, cryptography, authentication, access control, vulnerabilities, risk management, and security best practices. Whether you're preparing for a cybersecurity course, studying for an exam, or trying to build a stronger foundation in security, I can help break down complex topics into understandable concepts.
Data Structures

Data Structures

Data structures are one of the most important foundations of computer science, and I enjoy helping students understand both the concepts and the reasoning behind them. I can help with arrays, linked lists, stacks, queues, trees, hash tables, graphs, sorting algorithms, searching algorithms, and algorithm analysis. My goal is to help students understand why different approaches work and how to choose the right tool for a problem.
HTML

HTML

I have experience building websites and web applications from the ground up and enjoy helping students learn the foundations of web development. I can help with HTML structure, elements, semantic markup, forms, links, tables, accessibility basics, and best practices for writing clean, maintainable HTML. Whether you're creating your first webpage, working through a class assignment, or learning how websites are built, I can help you understand the fundamentals and build confidence.
Java

Java

I have experience using Java for software development and computer science coursework, and I enjoy helping students build a strong foundation in programming. I can help with Java fundamentals including variables, control flow, methods, classes, object-oriented programming, inheritance, interfaces, data structures, debugging, and problem solving. Whether you're learning Java for the first time, working through a programming assignment, or preparing for an exam, I can help you understand the concepts and become a more confident programmer.
JavaScript

JavaScript

I have professional experience building web applications using JavaScript and modern frontend technologies. I can help students learn JavaScript fundamentals including variables, functions, arrays, objects, loops, DOM manipulation, asynchronous programming, debugging, and best practices. Whether you're learning JavaScript for the first time, building a website, working through a web development course, or debugging a project, I can help you understand the concepts and become a more confident programmer.
Linux

Linux

I use Linux regularly in software development and can help students become comfortable working in a Linux environment. I can help with command-line basics, file systems, permissions, shell commands, SSH, scripting, package management, and troubleshooting common Linux issues. Whether you're setting up a development environment or learning Linux for a computer science course, I can help you build confidence using the terminal.
Python

Python

Python is one of my favorite languages. It's easy to read and write, and you can use it for just about anything. I've used Python on all sorts of projects, from web servers to data analysis to artificial intelligence. Whether you're writing your first program or diving into complex algorithms, I'd be happy to help you use Python effectively.
React

React

React is my go-to library for frontend development. It's powerful, well-documented, and has a rich collection of component libraries that make it easy to build aesthetic applications without doing a ton of custom styling. I'd be happy to help you with the fundamentals of React and show you some of my favorite ways to use React when working on my own projects.
SQL

SQL

I have experience working with databases using both raw SQL queries and ORM (Object-Relational Mapping) tools. I'm also quite familiar with broader database topics, such as relational and non-relational database design concepts, performance trade-offs, and ACID guarantees.
