Thanks for checking out my profile. My name is Alex, and I have over a decade's worth of experience either tutoring or teaching in the classroom. I have a bachelor's degree in math and a master's degree in teaching from Kent State University. While I was in college I worked for the university as a math tutor. I covered classes ranging from Intro to College Algebra through Calculus II and Statistics.
I'm currently in my seventh year of teaching. I have taught Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2, and currently teach Pre-Calculus, and a Calculus class where my students earn dual-credit in high school and a nearby college. I have also completed training to teach AP Calc.
In my experience I have noticed that most struggles in math are caused by either moving along in the curriculum before the student has a strong grasp of existing material or confusion over new topics. When I tutor I try to recognize where those problems are, and we work towards fixing them. Once we get through that, the student starts making really significant progress very quickly.
In working with literally thousands of students, the biggest thing I have learned is that there are no two that are the exact same. Due to this, my tutoring is never the same. I will do my best to find where you are having troubles, and work with you in a way that you understand. Before you know it, math will seem much easier than you thought possible. My son has been tutoring precalculus with Alex for several months now. He tells me that Alex is the best math teacher he has ever had. He explains concepts clearly, identifies areas of difficulty easily and accomplishes a great deal in an hour. He makes difficult concepts understandable. Every session is productive. He also helped with SAT prep which my son benefited from greatly. I highly recommend Alex for upper level mathematics. He is patient and responsive to the individual needs of his students.
Alex ensures that he explains in a way that you really grasp the material, understanding not only what you are doing but why you are doing it. Wonderful tutor.
Ian siad Alex explained a couple of concepts in a way it was much easier to understand than his classroom teacher did. He was really happy with the lesson.
Alex has now been working with my 2 teenagers for 4 months. One is taking precalculus and the other geometry. Both of my teens have been happy with the instruction they have been receiving from Alex. They have expressed that he is very good at explaining topics that they are struggling with and expanding on those topics to help them move forward with the curriculum.
My son started tutoring with Alex midway through last school year when he was in Algebra III. He is now in Pre-Calc and he continues to work with him weekly. My son really enjoys his time with Alex. Alex is able to make Pre-Calc make sense and my son always comes from tutoring in a better mood than he went in!
Alex is helping my son prepare for the GRE in the Math area and he felt very comfortable with Alex after the first meeting.
I am seeing a little improvement with my comprehension of college algebra. Hope to improve more as tutoring continues. Thanks
We've had Alex work with my husband and brother on their college Precalc for at least 5 sessions and we've asked him to come back next semester. Alex is patient and thorough. Before the sessions both guys felt completely overwhelmed, now they each have a good understanding of what they were doing. I think Alex is so wonderful and I'm truly happy to have found him.
I asked Alex to help my son with Algebra, who was struggling and behind in his coursework. After just a few sessions, my son is more confident in his math abilities and catching up! Alex has a great communication style that works. In addition, he also takes the time to write a quick email detailing how the lesson went. My only regret is that I didn't hire him earlier. I'll definitely be recommending him to others.
Alex made time to have a session with our son , he was pretty busy but he made time for us. I really appreciate that! Thank you Alex! My son was having problems feeling overwhelmed with math problems. Alex helped my son not feel intimidated by them, helped him learn to break the problems down step by step and by the end of ONE session, my son was doing the problems easily, even doing more complex problems than he needed help with. If I had the funds, and Alex had the time, I'd hire him twice a week all month long!! You are number ONE. Plus Alex has a very outgoing and easy to get along with personality, that put my son at ease. And its not easy to do that with my son. Thank you Alex!
My son has greatly improved his math skills working with Alex. He was resistant to tutoring but goes every Sunday without an argument. I would highly recommend Alex.
My son really liked Alex who is a senior in high school who was failing calculus. Alex was very patient and helped explain calculus in a way that my son was able to understand. Alex was very easy to get in touch with, very accommodating with times to meet. He was always on time and dependable and I really appreciated his after tutoring messages. Alex was able to meet with my son's math teacher and myself. Alex was had a big part in making my son's senior year a success.
Math and I are not friends. At all. I was retaking alg. 2 and still didn't get it. A friend of mine had just got this amazing tutor, who made him see the light of math! That tutor, was Alex. Alex is really great. Every lesson I understood something more, and laughed a lot, which is really great stuff. There isn't really anything bad I can say about him. If you need a tutor, this guy is your man. He just knows.
Thank you. I could hear the difference in his voice from the start of the lesson to the end when he seemed to "get it."
Alex has worked with both my students - each with very different needs. He was able to quickly assess their skills and weaknesses and develop a plan so they could achieve their goals. One of my students was able to raise her SAT math score by over 100 points! My other student was able to reach a level of confidence in test taking that had been a barrier to success! Alex had an approachable but thoughtful style. Both my students felt comfortable and reported they felt he really listened to them and took the time to explain things in an understandable way. I really appreciated his insightful and prompt feedback so I could follow up at home. He was easy to reach by phone and email, and was able to work with our sometimes crazy schedule without any difficulty. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a tutor. You won't be sorry!!!
Alex was a good, patient tutor. When I didn't understand something he would find a different way to explain until I understood. He helped me to learn how to convert word problems into an equation, that could then be evaluated. He showed me some tricks with exponents that I will use for a long time. We still have lot of studying ahead of us. I am glad I inquired for help from Alex.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
