Hello!

I've tutored all through college and grad school, in chemistry, biology, math and Spanish. I love talking to students from different backgrounds and sharing what makes my subjects fun in a way that makes them more approachable. I am really passionate about science education and communication and detangling a subject for the student.

One of the things I heard over and over during the decade I've been tutoring is that someone is just 'not good' at a subject. While I feel the frustration of struggling with a new thing, I love changing people's minds. Subjects are skill sets just like any others, and it's ok to struggle while you become better at them! But given time and effort, there's few things more satisfying than watching a student become more confident.

Math was a big part of grad school and my professional career! I tutor math through calculus, including statistics, as well as biology and chemistry topics through the college level. I offer slightly discounted rates at the moment for students taking Genetics, Evolution, and Ecology. I also have several years of tutoring for Regents exams in math and science topics, and can do subject specific review for MCAT, DCAT, and GRE preparation.

I have a lengthy background in Chemistry with a master's and PhD, my focus is polymer science but I'm interested in a lot of different aspects of both fields. I continue my education with popular science reading and citizen science, and love explaining (or learning about) the latest thing I have heard about.

In addition to enjoying teaching and tutoring, I'm also passionate about neurodiversity. I've learned a lot in the process about cognitive science and how different brains need to learn or process information in different ways. If someone needs a new approach or just to hear things explained in different ways, I am happy to help find a way to make it work.

I keep my biology background fresh with background reading and tutoring students, and I work with everyone from Regents and AP Biology in high school to college students to graduate students editing their dissertations. Environmental science is applying mixed concepts of biology, ecology, and chemistry to see how all three intersect. I have taken a full undergraduate curriculum in both biology and chemistry, including ecology, evolution, and environmental chemistry, and have tutored in these individual subjects. I'm more than happy to cover these subjects together in environmental science, which I have also tutored for several years.

I have tutored Genetics for 10 years over the last two decades, and have a Masters and PhD in Chemistry in addition to my undergraduate education in Biology and Chemistry. In 2024 I retook the course to refresh my background on new science in the topic, and am continuing my education in the subject. I have tutored it both in focused courses and in interdisciplinary courses with evolution and ecology.

Regents is not a subject but a qualifying exam, I am proficient in tutoring math through calculus and statistics, as well as chemistry and biology through the college level. I studied chemistry and biology for my undergraduate focus, and covered chemistry additionally for my master's and doctorate degrees. I can help support the needs of students taking the Regents exams in Geometry and Algebra and any of the Living Environment, Chemistry and Physics exams.

Amazing Science Tutor with a Gift for Working with Autistic Students

Currently studying for NY Living environment regents exam. My daughter is a student on the autism spectrum who often struggles with attention, transitions, etc — but Dr O works with her strengths and weaves them into her lessons.
