Problem solving takes practice! Drawing on my MA in math education and over 20 years of experience tutoring, I coach students to master algebra, precalculus, trigonometry, calculus, and statistics. My student-centric teaching style has helped people struggling with math anxiety and learning differences, including students on the autism spectrum. By experiencing and building on successes in problem-solving, students improve their mathematical skills and develop confidence and motivation.

I love tutoring because one-on-one interaction is the best way to catalyze students' problem-solving skills and truly engage with the conceptual underpinnings of mathematical endeavors. I specialize in high school math because students often begin having trouble with the broader range of concepts and vocabulary in algebra and precalculus, which is precisely when students can learn what will be most useful to them in everyday life. I draw on real-world examples and applications in every subject: in precalculus, logarithms help us understand the interest rates on loans, and in trigonometry we can use graphs to track the changing seasons. When the problem-solving power of math helps students engage with topics they care about, math becomes not a chore but a skill to be honed through practice.

My experience began as a peer tutor at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics and continued at Duke University where I got my Bachelor of Science in mathematics and my teaching certification at the same time. I earned my Master of Arts in mathematics education at Ohio State University shortly thereafter, where my my thesis focused on using physical models to help students in AP calculus solve integrals to find the volume of unusual shapes, one of the most difficult topics included in AP mathematics.

Approved Subjects

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

In addition to my undergraduate degree in math, I have been tutoring algebra 1 for over 15 years. I especially enjoy helping students understand how the tools of algebra help them describe the world around them so they can solve different kinds of problems.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

In addition to my undergraduate degree in math, I have deep experience tutoring high school and college students in algebra 2. I emphasize the connections between graphical and algebraic representations of equations to help students understand the broader ideas behind the problems they need to solve.
Calculus

Calculus

My master's thesis focused on using hands-on models and real world examples to help students understand how to set up integrals for finding the volume of complicated shapes. I have helped students prepare for the AP Calculus AB and BC exams, and I have worked with applications of calculus in fields as diverse as business and biology.
Discrete Math

Discrete Math

As part of a specialized program in mathematics, my high school offered electives in discrete math, and I studied it again in more complex situations during my undergraduate math degree. I find it useful to bring an understanding of these problem-solving techniques to most situations with real-world applications.
GED

GED

I have a master’s degree in math and earned my teaching licensure in grades 7-12 math.
Geometry

Geometry

In addition to my undergraduate degree in math, I have deep experience tutoring high school and college students in geometry. I especially enjoy helping students understand how mathematical reasoning works and how to construct proofs.
Logic

Logic

I have taught logic to high school and college students, including discrete mathematics, basic number theory, and geometry. In my undergraduate degree in mathematics and my graduate studies for an MA in mathematics education, I learned applications across multiple fields. I can help students understand syllogisms and basic set theory, or work through predicate logic problems, as well as understanding the proof methods that are important in mathematics.
Precalculus

Precalculus

I especially enjoy helping students understand how the more abstract language of functions presented in precalculus prepares them for more advanced mathematical concepts. In my experience, most students learn more quickly and easily from my very visual style of connecting algebraic and graphical representations of functions.
SAT Math

SAT Math

My experience tutoring students preparing for the SAT includes everything from creating a study plan from scratch for a student just beginning to prepare to helping students refine their skills in particular problem-solving areas in order to improve their already high scores.
Statistics

Statistics

I have experience teaching and applying statistics across a broad range of situations: everything from helping high school students prepare for the AP Statistics exam to teaching graduate students how to apply statistical analyses in political science, history, and business contexts.
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

I have years of experience helping students through the challenges of trigonometry, whether they are encountering it in a geometry, algebra, precalculus, or even calculus context. My visual style of teaching cuts down on memorization and helps students grasp the main ideas without getting lost in the numbers and notation.

Very helpful tutor

She went above and beyond to help me with my pre-calc midterm, and I couldn't be more grateful for her efforts. She explained the concepts clearly, broke down the problems step by step, and made sure I understood everything before moving on. Thanks to her guidance and patience, I felt much more confident walking into the exam. She truly did an amazing job, and her support made all the difference in my preparation.

Both my children gave Anne 5/5 for helping them prepare for their AP calculus exam.

Both my children scored Anne 5/5 for helping them prepare for their AP calculus tests and exam. Very knowledgeable and patient tutor who knew how to tailor the tutoring sessions to meet the needs of our twin children who are very different learners. Throughout the year, she guided them and helped breakdown the concepts of AP Calculus such that both excelled. Thanks Anne! Irene 05/23

Great Tutor!

Anne is a Great tutor. My sessions with her resulted in 100% accuracy with my homework assignments. When tutoring, Anne presents a clear picture of the problem which helped me better understand the problem and how to approach solving it. Ann helped me do and better understand the following problems, just to name a few: Understand the concepts of a random variable and a probability distribution. Be able to distinguish between discrete and continuous random variables. Be able to compute and interpret the expected value, variance, and standard deviation for a discrete random variable. Be able to construct an empirical discrete distribution from available data. Be able to compute the covariance and correlation coefficient for a bivariate empirical discrete distribution. Be able to compute and work with probabilities involving a binomial probability distribution. Be able to compute and work with probabilities involving a Poisson probability distribution. Know when and how to use the hypergeometric probability distribution, Understand the difference between how probabilities are computed for discrete and continuous random variables.
