Hello, I’m Anne! I earned a B.A. in English magna cum laude as well as a law degree with honors.

Before going to law school, I taught English at a top-ranked high school. I've graded hundreds of essays and research papers, and I know what works. In law school, I was at the top of my class, not because I was smarter than other students, but because I understood how to organize and express ideas effectively in examinations and essays.

After retiring from my legal career, I've returned to teaching, which I love. I’ve coached students working on master's theses and doctoral dissertations. I've also worked with high school students and middle school kids.

Usually, we sit together at a computer and work through the topic. I’ve shown students how to turn a pile of research into an organized paper that their teachers will enjoy reading.

ESL: I’ve taught English as a second language and am familiar with TOEFL (Test Of English as a Foreign Language). Because I've traveled widely, I know what it feels like to need better skills in a new language! I've tutored students from China, Cambodia, South Korea, Vietnam, Pakistan, India, Ghana, and Somalia.

DOCTORAL CANDIDATES: Doctoral candidates sometimes submit draft dissertations by email. After I review the draft and mark comments regarding grammar, punctuation and style, I meet with the student to discuss and explain my comments. My fees for this service are lower per hour because these students usually need 12 to 20 hours within a short time. (Note: Wyzant requires that you approve any hours of work I do alone, not in person with you at my side.)

I prefer a clean, simple style that is easy to read. I understand that doctoral candidates sometimes prefer a more complex, sophisticated style for their dissertations, with complicated sentences and recondite wording. I can help with that, too!

ACT/SAT: Some students want coaching to raise test scores on national standardized tests. We can do that!

PERSONAL ESSAY FOR APPLICATIONS: My clients have been especially p

Bar Exam

Bar Exam

I passed the Ohio Bar Examination on the first try, and it was a three-day examination recognized as one of the more difficult in the United States. I understand the strategies for preparing for, and for taking, the Multistate bar exam, as I had little time to study and had taken few of the examination subjects during law school. One week after earning my J.D., I started a busy clerkship for a federal appellate judge, and I had no time to study for the bar exam. I took several intensive courses designed to reveal the styles of questioning and how to narrow the answers to the most likely answer. I practiced and practiced, taking sample bar exams until I got faster and faster. I learned the patterns of the questions and when to pick a right answer that seemed wrong at first glance. I would be a great exam coach because I have substantive legal knowledge, test-taking skills and strategies, experience as a teacher, and experience in building confidence. I can make complex things simpler. Also, I can help make the long slog more enjoyable!
Literature

Literature

My undergraduate degree was in literature and philosophy, with honors. I taught literature for years at an elite prep school and have been a visiting lecturer at colleges. I've continued to read and enjoy the great works of literature, both European and Asian. I not only know this stuff, I love it. And I can make it clear, interesting, relevant, and fun.
Writing

Writing

I have a bachelor's degree in English, and taught English in high schools in Cincinnati. I also have a graduate degree. I have worked as a professional writer and editor. I love to help students with their writing. I have coached students who are working on their master's thesis. I have coached foreign students for whom English is a second language. I have also coached college freshman who had no idea how to write an essay, and they have all done very well. I am an experienced teacher, and I know what it feels like to need help with writing.

Patient and responsible tutor

Anne helped me review my dissertation chapters not only on the sentence level, but also in several deeper levels such as organization, relevance of the reference, context flow and many more. I appreciate her patience and teaching style for a second-language writer and speaker. She really cares about my project and me, not merely because it's her work, but because of her warm heart.
