Art History

As a professor in the Humanities, I teach Art History of all chronological periods of the Western World. Similarly, my tutorials provide a broad synthetic understanding of art history and the cross-pollination of painters and sculptors, composers, choreographers, writers, and architects. While guiding students through the history of art, my tutorials connect historical traditions and practices to techniques through the ages. Didactic instruction is combined with a practical application of the medium when we explore history of art through different time periods and geographic locations. Specific Cultural elements such as religion and philosophy are explored to reveal their impact on the artist’s imagination that yields a specific style. My tutorials deem changing theoretical considerations and world views as the backbone for related research relating theory to artistic expressions as found not only in museums but in the world around us. I came to the field as a studio artist, a painter and later sculptor in glass and ceramics, fascinated by both, the creative mind and process as well as the the pursuit of thorough understanding of technique and aesthetics.

My tutorial provides four areas that are addressed sequentially: 1) selecting a topic; 2) locating and evaluating resources; 3) preparing the speech; and 4) speaking to an audience. These areas build on each other. Some topics within areas address parallel items rather than sequential ones. Listening to sample speeches is used to understand how audiences may listen to your speech or to improve your own listening skills. Novice speech-givers as well as experienced speech-givers will benefit from organizing notes for a seamless delivery and summary pages designed for particular speech types. As a professor and advocate of several not-for-profit organizations, I have spent most of my waking hours as an orator, presenting appeals, rebuttals and pitches. Additional non-comatose hours are dedicated to my second career in indie movies and the commercial voice-over arena. A logical progression of ideas, stage presence and the right choice of tone as dictated by subject matter and audience are practiced through rote exercises, be it passionate, informative, lamenting, entertaining, etc. Posture, sound production, verbal and body language, breathing/pausing patterns and voice volume are all elements that are covered in my tutorial during which I see myself more in the role of a coach than a tutor.

Pronunciation patterns specific to the student’s native language are addressed from the perspective of a speech therapist as part of the German language production to offset native accent, melody and sound emulation.

Vocabulary expansion is a continual endeavor for both, native as well as non-native speakers, in business, for tests, for pleasure, as a speaker/presenter and a writer. I know so from my foreign language studies, spelling bees, and as a poet and speech writer in different professional fields with industry-specific vocabularies. In my tutorials, we practice the advice, I leave my students with in the English Department: 1) Use a dictionary. It requires discipline to take the time to look up words and to learn how to spell and pronounce them, but it is the best way to expand your vocabulary. 2) Use a thesaurus. You achieve word variety instead of sounding repetitive. 3) Read. There is no substitute. 4) Choose your company wisely: If you socialize exclusively with people who have a limited vocabulary, yours will not grow either. 5) Be systematic and learn one new word a day, maintain a list, and review your list weekly, monthly.

My English Tutorials engage students in the careful reading and critical analysis of literature and include strategies regarding the close reading of texts, to understand a work's structure, style, and themes, as well as composition elements such as the use of figurative language, imagery, symbolism, and tone. It is important to distinguish among the different kinds of writing since they require different response sklll sets. Therefore, unless otherwise differently specified by the client, various genres and periods, are read deliberately and thoroughly, taking time to understand a work's complexity, to absorb its richness of meaning, and to analyze how that meaning is embodied in literary form. In addition to considering a work's literary artistry, students learn to consider the social, cultural and historical values it reflects. A “tool kit” for interpretation focuses on the weaknesses of each student that are established during a thorough skill assessment. Specifically, a) writing to understand a literary work involves writing response and reaction papers along with annotation, free-writing, and keeping some form of a reading journal; b) writing to explain a literary work involves analysis and interpretation, and includes writing brief focused analyses on aspects of language and structure. c) writing to evaluate a literary work involves making and explaining judgments about its artistry and exploring its underlying social and cultural values through analysis, interpretation, and argument. My tutorials emphasize expository, analytical, and argumentative essays while well-constructed creative writing assignments help students see from the inside how literature is written. The goal of both types of writing is to increase the student’s ability to explain clearly, cogently, even elegantly, what s/he understands about literary works and how to interpret each. My writing instruction focuses on developing and organizing ideas in clear, coherent, and persuasive language; a study of the elements of style; attention to precision and correctness as necessary; and negotiating differing critical perspectives to develop an argument or present an analysis at length. Depending on the specific area of sub-study, its historical events and themes are reviewed in significant depth to help develop history's habits of mind by providing a thorough grounding in the skills required for historical thinking, including an in depth understanding of how to read and utilize primary sources and determine bias in secondary sources. My own experience includes historical writing about European History as it applies to the making of American History, significant experience in historical research and an understanding of the principles of historiography. My tutorials aim to provide grounding in the fundamental concepts of the connectivity between Geography, Culture, Economics, and Ecology that together impact the political events that make up US history.

I offer both, Tutorials in AP Literature as well as European History. We will reflect on strategies as well as content related considerations pertaining to multiple-choice sections designed to measure the student’s knowledge of European history from the High Renaissance to the present. Helpful red threads will be established to mark the time line and blue threads to mark major political shifts while green ones mark main societal breakthroughs. Examining their intersections will reveal the connectivity between events and human development. Topical emphasis will be determined by the student’s strengths and weaknesses – however, overall emphasis lies on the period from 1450 to the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic era to the present while nineteenth century and the twentieth century thought highlights cultural and intellectual, political and diplomatic, and social and economic themes. We will practice free-response with readings followed by respective essay questions and review various systematic approaches to answering thematic questions including planning, outlining, writing (content choices and focus) and reviewing (grammar and mechanics) essays. Reading strategies too are part of the tutorial for without cognitive understanding of the material provided, answers cannot reveal an adequate response. Textual analysis, speed and focus are reinforced through grouping exercises whether they are thematic, chronological or periodic. Dr. Susann was ready for me when I arrived. She asked me to tell her about myself (in German), we read and talked about a short passage from a magazine, we had some general conversation, and she told me what she believes I need to focus on at this time. Prior to beginning instruction with Dr. Susann, I had one year of college level German. Despite this, there were still some concepts I only half understood, and subtleties of pronunciation I had still not mastered. Dr. Susann quickly got to the core of my problems.
