I'm a UCLA Ph.D., published author, and experienced university instructor with a lifelong passion for language, ideas, and the art of making a compelling argument. I work with high school, undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students on analytical and argumentative essays, literary analysis, research papers and reports, college admissions essays, personal statements, theses, dissertations, and other academic writing projects. Whether you're struggling to develop an original argument, organize complex research, or refine your prose, I bring the perspective of a scholar, teacher, and professional writer to the work.

I earned my doctorate in Critical Studies at UCLA, where I received the Otis Ferguson Award for Critical Writing. I also hold an M.A. from Ohio State University and a B.A. in Philosophy and Creative Writing, summa cum laude, from Ohio Wesleyan University. I’ve been a poetry journal and lifestyle magazine editor, a newspaper film critic, a ghostwriter for Fortune 500 executives, and a freelance narrative consultant to major organizations, companies, and public intellectuals.
My teaching experience spans three decades and two major universities. At Ohio State, I taught undergraduate English Composition for six semesters. At UCLA, I taught maximum-capacity undergraduate courses in film history and theory for six semesters. Later, at Ohio State's Fisher College of Business, I helped develop and teach MBA coursework in digital marketing, based on the book I co-wrote, and designed and taught an executive education course in futuring.

I believe strong writing is inseparable from sharp thinking. My approach is joyfully collaborative, intellectually engaging, and attentive to each student's distinctive strengths and emerging voice. Feel free to contact me with any questions or to schedule a lesson. I look forward to working with you to accomplish your writing goals!

Approved Subjects

Film

Film

I earned my Ph.D. in Critical Studies at UCLA's School of Theater, Film and Television, where I taught undergraduate film history and theory for six semesters. Selected as one of two doctoral candidates nationwide for a Research Fellowship at the UC Humanities Research Institute, I participated in an advanced seminar on American film genres; I also received the Charles Boyer Fellowship for a year of film theory and philosophy study at the University of Paris. My peer-reviewed scholarship has appeared in Cinema Journal and Wide Angle, and I've presented research at Society for Cinema Studies conferences. I help students analyze films, engage with critical theory, and develop original interpretations and persuasive scholarly arguments.
Philosophy

Philosophy

I hold a B.A. in Philosophy and Creative Writing, summa cum laude, an M.A. in Film Theory, and a Ph.D. in Critical Studies from UCLA, where I received the Otis Ferguson Award for Critical Writing. As a Charles Boyer Research Fellow, I studied philosophy and film theory at the University of Paris and pursued further studies at the Collège International de Philosophie. My scholarly work encompasses aesthetics, phenomenology, hermeneutics, and continental philosophy, engaging thinkers from Kant and Hegel to Heidegger, Foucault, Lyotard, Derrida, and Deleuze. Drawing on my UCLA and OSU teaching and research experience, I help students navigate challenging philosophical texts, formulate original arguments, and develop clear, rigorous analytical essays.
Thesis Writing

Thesis Writing

I hold a Ph.D. in Critical Studies from UCLA, where I received the Otis Ferguson Award for Critical Writing, and have published peer-reviewed academic scholarship. I taught undergraduate writing at Ohio State University and film history and theory at UCLA, developing students' analytical and argumentative skills. My academic and professional work spans decades of research, critical analysis, and sophisticated writing across disciplines. I help thesis and dissertation writers sharpen research questions, organize complex material, construct compelling arguments, and refine their scholarly voice.
Writing

Writing

For more than 25 years, I have helped people with consequential ideas find the structure, language, and voice to make them persuasive. As Executive Director of Thought Leadership at IBM iX, editor-in-chief of two consumer publications, and co-author of The Open Brand, I shaped research reports, articles, white papers, speeches, scripts, and book-length manuscripts—and ghostwrote bylines and speeches for senior executives. At UCLA, my classes routinely filled to capacity, and I became known for making difficult ideas engaging and accessible without oversimplifying them. My coaching is incisive but encouraging: I help writers identify the governing idea, strengthen structure and evidence, and refine their prose without taking over the voice that makes the work theirs.
