I have a strong academic and professional background in biology and microbiology. I earned my Bachelor of Science in Microbiology from The Ohio State University, where I graduated Magna Cum Laude from the Honors College with a 3.81 GPA and a minor in Zoology. I also earned a Master’s degree in Biotechnology with a specialization in Bioinformatics from the University of Maryland Global Campus, graduating with a 4.0 GPA. My undergraduate coursework included advanced biology and microbiology courses, and my early interest in biology began with Honors and AP Biology in high school, where I earned a 5 on the AP Biology exam.
I have experience teaching and explaining scientific concepts to students and colleagues in a variety of settings. During high school, I volunteered as a tutor, working one-on-one with other students and helping them understand course material, prepare for exams, and develop effective study strategies. In my professional career as a microbiologist, I have continued to develop my teaching skills by training and mentoring coworkers and delivering developmental webinars at my workplace. These experiences have taught me how to adjust my approach depending on a learner’s background, strengths, and areas of difficulty.
My tutoring approach focuses on making biology understandable rather than simply helping students memorize information. I like to break complicated concepts into smaller pieces, use examples and connections to explain why processes work the way they do, and ask questions that help students arrive at the answer themselves. I am comfortable tutoring high school biology, including AP Biology, as well as college-level biology and microbiology. My professional experience in a pathogen laboratory also allows me to connect classroom concepts to real-world applications in microbiology, molecular biology, genetics, and biotechnology.
