I’ve tutored at a college writing center and taught college-level courses ranging from Beginning Composition to upper-division Business Communication.
When I earned my Master’s degree in English and became a college level-writing teacher and tutor, I didn’t imagine that my own children’s struggles with reading and writing would set me on the path to becoming a reading instructor. I am fortunate that my journey has helped me discover that I enjoy working with learners of all ages, particularly with beginning and struggling readers; I especially love working with Pre-K through Grade 1 students.
My experience includes supporting PreK learners at the Ohio Deaf and Blind Education Services preschool. It also includes serving as a Kindergarten Literacy Alternative Instructor, tutoring 35 kindergarteners in print awareness, phonological and phonemic awareness, phonics, and handwriting using Ohio-approved Core Curriculum and Reading Intervention programs. I served as an Ohio Reading Corps/AmeriCorps tutor, where I provided small group and one-on-one instruction to grade K and grade 1 students, both native English speakers and Spanish-speaking students learning to read in English. My own children’s educational challenges provided deep experience in guiding and teaching readers and writers with dyslexia, non-verbal learning disabilities, and ADHD.
Reading and writing do not come easily to everyone, but developing strong reading and writing skills paves the way for a lifetime of enjoyment and success in academics, in the workplace, and in life. I can help.
