Hey there!
I'm passionate about art -- about making it, teaching it, and thinking through it by writing about it.
Currently, I'm a PhD candidate at Ohio State University, where I teach art history in-person and online. My field of expertise is the history of comics, but I'm also knowledgeable in the history of painting from the Renaissance until now. The focus of my teaching is writing, because it is through writing that we form and organize our thoughts. I present material in my teaching through the lens of argument, circling back whenever I can to the elements of argument: claims, evidence, stakes, etc. My hope in doing so is that students won't just gain a knowledge of art history, but also a knowledge of the skills involved in parsing an argument and constructing their own.
Prior to getting my PhD, I got a masters in Art History at the University of Chicago and a BFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. I didn't teach at these schools, but when I lived in Chicago, I worked as a teacher at two small organizations, a literary nonprofit where I taught creative writing and a small art school where I taught drawing and painting. My students at both organizations were grade schoolers ages 8 to 16.
