Bio

I've been teaching mathematics for nearly 20 years, and tutoring for more than 30 years. I received my first Mathematics degree in 2005 from California State University - Chico, a B.S. in Applied Mathematics. In 2006, I was offered a position as a middle school algebra and primarily high school Geometry teacher at St. Mary's of Medford, a college preparatory school with a college grad success rate above 90%. In 2009, I returned to Columbus, Ohio and received an M.S. in Mathematics, specializing in Mathematics Education, in 2012.

I have since been teaching at Ohio State as a lecturer and as a teaching assistant. I have become exceptionally good at teaching Math 1131 - Business Calculus, Math 1148 - College Algebra II, and Math 1149 - Trigonometry. I have also become exceptionally skilled at helping students in my office, in the OSU MSLC tutor rooms, and as a private tutor, for middle school, high school, and Ohio State students, while teaching at Ohio State.

In 1987, as a high school senior, I received the highest score of the AP Calculus Exam at Worthington High School (hundreds took the exam). When I was a high school student, I found studying mathematics to be a very lonely experience. There was no internet, and I knew no one who cared nearly as much as I did about what I was learning. I've since found that what may drive me the most to want to help others so sincerely is the experience of feeling alone in my studies, and having to be patient enough to wait to talk with my teacher the next day.

I love helping people with math, and I do my best to build confidence, not just the various understandings of math concepts and procedures. I love being able to be someone that students can turn to for help, someone they can count on to always care.

Thank you,
Tim Tussing

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I started helping people with Algebra when I was in high school. While in college, I began tutoring college students. A few years after receiving my first of two degrees in mathematics, I was offered a teaching position at St. Mary's of Medford, Oregon, a highly successful college preparatory school, where I taught primarily middle school Algebra and high school geometry for two years. Shortly after, I received my Masters in Mathematics, Specializing in Math Education from my hometown Ohio State. And that is where I taught for 12 years, primarily College Algebra of three levels (mostly Math 1075 and 1148). While teaching at Ohio State, I have worked with thousands of Algebra students as a teacher, hundreds of Algebra students during my office hours, and a few hundred Algebra students as a tutor, both for Ohio State and privately. I believe it is the blood work of almost every math course I have encountered, extremely fundamental. I really enjoy helping people to develop, broaden, and strengthen their Algebra skills. I've worked with Algebra students of all ages, never expecting any prior experience nor knowledge. I take pride in thorough explanations with a compassionate, forgiving nature. I love helping others and building their confidence towards success.

Drums

Drums

I've been playing drums since I was 14. I've enjoyed helping people develop their rudimentary skills and sense of timing for most of my life. I have two math degrees, and I've been working as a math tutor for over 25 years and as a drum instructor since I was in my 20s. I love incorporating my math knowledge with my percussion artistic sensibilities into my teaching. I would love to help anyone to develop such interests in percussion and drumming!
Geometry

Geometry

Decades of experience tutoring Geometry students, middle school, high school and college levels. Middle school and high school Geometry teaching experience, two years, private, college preparatory, main Geometry teacher, 2006-2008. 12 years teaching experience at The Ohio State University, primarily teaching Trigonometry, Algebra, and Calculus, 2010-2021. BS in Applied Mathematics, 2005 MS in Mathematics, Specializing in Math Education, 2012
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

I've been helping young math students to develop a rich and thorough understanding of core math concepts for decades. As a tutor and as a middle school math teacher, I've worked with students who are encountering Prealgebra for the first time in their lives. I love helping students who need clarification and/or desire a thorough understanding of the most important fundamentals of Prealgebra and Algebra. I taught middle school and high school students at St. Mary's of Medford, a college preparatory school with a college graduation success rate well above 90%. I taught primarily middle school Algebra and high school Geometry for two years at St. Mary's, before returning to my hometown, Columbus, Ohio, where I received an M.S. in Mathematics, specializing in Mathematics Education, in 2012. I continued teaching for The Ohio State University, Math Department until 2021. The first course I taught was designed to prepare future teachers for math education. The most common courses I've taught at Ohio State are Math 1075 and Math 1148, both College Algebra courses.
Precalculus

Precalculus

I have two decades of precalculus tutoring and teaching experience, working with high school and college students.
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

The course I taught the most at Ohio State was Math 1149 - Trigonometry. I also was the primary lecturer, with over 500 students, for Math 1150, a combination of Calculus and Trigonometry, Fall Semester 2019. I also have a solid background in Geometry. My first classroom teaching experience was at St. Mary's of Medford, Oregon, where I taught primarily high school Geometry and middle school Algebra.

Fantastic tutor

Timothy is an amazing tutor. Not only is he great at explaining concepts, my son is in Math Analysis, he is kind and supportive. His response time and flexibility in working with our schedule was unmatched. He is thorough and his teaching is efficient and comprehensive. We are really glad we found Timothy, and feel confident in highly recommending him.

Clarifies Concepts

My son does fairly well in math, but that does not always result in good test performance. Timothy is guiding my son through a practice state exam for Algebra 2. My son emphasizes that, while he helps him get through the problems, Timothy tries to make sure my son understands how the problems are solved and why the solution makes sense. Timothy ties together the test preparation with understanding, which will be needed when my son advances to higher level courses. Overall, Timothy has helped us confirm what my son knows and spot where he needs explanation so he can get a test result the reflects good preparation.
