I've been tutoring students on and off since 2014. I had the privilege for working for one year in the Public Library system as a technology lab educator where I worked with adults to boost their digital literacy, typing, and resume and cover letter writing skills. In the same position, I also worked 1-on-1 with high school and college students. I tutored guided high school students through the process of conducting research, formulating a thesis, and outlining and editing papers for honors English courses. With college students, we focused more on developing time management skills and building study skills for college-level exams.
At the same time, I also volunteered as an informal peer tutor for organic at Temple University. I wasn't paid for this position, but I offered tutoring services to friends who were working through the premed program. I had taken both organic chemistry I and II, and finished both with an A grade. I know both course levels were challenging for other students and I was more than happy to lend my time to them free of charge to support them in learning vocabulary, chemical synthesis mechanisms, and the basic principles of of molecular orbital theory.
Finally, I have offered informal editing feedback to adults developing works of creative fiction. I provided developmental editing and line editing on a 75k+ word YA novel, developmental editing on multiple chapters of an adult genre fiction novel, and short form feedback edits on chapter-by-chapter submissions in writer support groups. I also have experience as a technical writer and a creative writer myself.
My approach to tutoring across all subjects is always to develop a professional but conversational relationship with my students and clients. I think it's important to first understand where students are confused and where they're struggling with gaps in knowledge. From there, I work collaboratively with each student to develop a tutoring process individualized to each student's needs.
