I am an RN with my master's degree in nursing and have over 25 years experience as a nurse educator in a variety of post-secondary education settings including nurse aide, diversified medical occupations, and diploma, associate, and baccalaureate nursing programs. Subject areas include fundamentals, medical-surgical nursing, physical assessment, pharmacology and dosage calculation, anatomy & physiology, and critical care nursing. I also have provided review courses for the NCLEX-RN. In addition, I have attended several workshops on test construction and believe that I can assist students who may be struggling with test taking. I am seeking to use my knowledge and skills to shape students understanding of nursing concepts and enhance their application of their own knowledge and skills in the profession of nursing.

Anatomy

Anatomy

I am very comfortable discussing the human body and have experience recently teaching an introductory level 1 human anatomy & physiology course (BIO 101 a 3 cr hr course) in the Biological Sciences Department at Columbus State Community College. In addition, I also taught Human Physiology (#262 a 4 cr hr course) at CSCC. I believe in using visual aids to enhance the student's knowledge and understanding of the complexities of the body and also include medical terminology, such as a 'transverse' (-- meaning across) plane which separates the body into superior (upper) and inferior (lower) segments, to facilitate learning. I believe in presenting material in a simple to complex format to enhance retention of content.
Biology

Biology

Focus of biology content includes basic principles of the characteristics of living organisms, cell structure and function including DNA and its function, cellular reproduction, genetics, human growth and development, homeostasis, and biochemistry.
Flute

Flute

I started playing flute in elementary school (5th grade) and continued through graduation from high school (total of 8 years) and was once first chair in concert band. I played piccolo as a senior in my high school marching band. I have had 3 years of professional organ music lessons and can read both treble and bass clefs. Years ago I successfully tutored a student with flute lessons, which helped her to maintain her interest in music and advance her position in her high school band. I currently am a substitute organist at St. Christopher's Catholic Church (Columbus, OH) and also on occasion have subbed as an organist at Christ the King Catholic Church, Columbus, OH. I also am a song leader (Cantor) at church and have sung in the adult choir for over 10 years. I have also played flute in a contemporary ensemble at church since graduating high school.
GED

GED

I have been a nurse educator for over 20 years teaching in a variety of nursing programs. As an instructor, I have taught math as part of dosage calculations using ratio proportion and dimensional analysis in pharmacology courses. I have a solid understanding of math having completed statistics and college level Algebra as part of my undergraduate education. Communication and command of the English language are essential components of establishing relationships with patients, their families, physicians, other health care providers, and colleagues. I incorporate proper phrasing in clinical documentation on a regular basis. I also have prior experience proofreading manuscripts of textbooks prior to next update for publication. I am enthusiastic about science and have taught microbiology, anatomy & physiology, physiology, and pathophysiology (diseases of the human body). I believe my knowledge of these subject areas along with other general knowledge will be beneficial and that I will be able to work with interested students to assist them in their efforts to prepare for and be successful on taking the GED.
Medical Coding

Medical Coding

I have taught Medical Terminology at several different post-secondary academic institutions including the former Academy of Court Reporting (Columbus, OH), the former Harrison College (Grove City, OH) as part of the Medical Assistant curriculum, and as an adjunct faculty at Columbus State Community College (Columbus, OH) as part of the Health Information Management Technologies (HIMT) course. Most recently (2023) I have taught Medical Terminology at EHOVE Career Center Adult Education Nursing Department to students enrolled in the Nursing Science and Medical Terminology course which is taught the first academic term of the LPN Program. I believe being familiar with the correct pronunciation, proper spelling, and the actual and appropriate use of medical terms garners respect from students, colleagues, patients, and their families when communicating about health care related matters and can also enhance effective therapeutic communication for continuity of care and providing relevant patient teaching. In addition, incorporating medical terminology into a patient's medical record invokes credence, trust, and respect that the nursing profession proudly aspires to uphold.
Microbiology

Microbiology

I am a registered nurse who has previously taught microbiology at the collegiate level for Lourdes College (a private liberal arts college in Sylvania, OH) to nursing students who were enrolled in an integrated science course (which included Microbiology) in their nursing program. As a nurse, I have a good understanding of microorganisms, their characteristics, and if a pathogen how to treat them and with which anti-infective(s). I am familiar with and can interpret culture & sensitivity (C&S) reports. In addition, I am knowledgeable about the emerging development of drug-resistant organisms (DROs) and the implications of this on infectious diseases.
NCLEX

NCLEX

I have completed several workshops on test construction, item writing, and exam analysis and have used this knowledge in developing quizzes/tests/exams for courses that I was responsible for assessing a student's knowledge and understanding of content. I am familiar with Bloom's Taxonomy of Learning and also the National Council for State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) National Council Licensure EXamination (NCLEX-RN) Test Plan (April 2010). In addition, I have previously provided reviews of subject areas and reviews of examinations as methods to enhance students confidence in test taking and in preparation for the NCLEX. I have also previously presented Med/Surg content as part of a formal NCLEX-RN review course. I am also familiar with addressing alternate format items which are included on NCLEX.
Nursing

Nursing

I have over 20 years teaching experience as a nursing instructor/educator. I have taught in RN programs at all levels. I am an advanced practice nurse (CNS: clinical nurse specialist) and although my background is Adult Health/Medical-Surgical Nursing, I consider myself a generalist with strong interests in pain management, wound care, and nutrition. I have a solid understanding of challenging topics including fluid & electrolytes (F & E), arterial blood gas interpretation (ABGs), electrocardiograph (ECG) analysis, laboratory tests & diagnostic studies, pharmacology, and dosage calculation. I would like to use my knowledge and expertise to enhance your understanding and application of these concepts to clinical practice, confidence with test taking, and success in preparing for the NCLEX.
Nutrition

Nutrition

Nutrition is an important component of one's health. I have a solid understanding of the three major nutrients: carbohydrates (CHO), proteins (prot), and fats/lipids and the various electrolytes, minerals, and vitamins that are necessary to maintain body functions. I am also knowledgeable of the various enzymes and hormones that are involved in the digestive process as well as food sources that are rich in providing the various nutrients.
Pharmacology

Pharmacology

I have recently taught pharmacology to nursing students in both an ADN and a BSN nursing program. I use a body systems approach and cover the prototype for each major classification of drugs including the generic and also trade/brand/proprietary names for the drug. In addition, I am familiar with the indications (reason prescribed), common adverse effects, and also address nursing implications for administering prescribed medications using the nursing process. In discussing pharmacology, I believe it is more than simply giving a pill and believe it is imperative to assist students to develop critical thinking skills which are important in safe and appropriate medication administration. Although it is impossible to know every medication that is on the market, I believe it is necessary to be familiar with the various drug classifications and commonly prescribed medications and herbal/natural plant products.
Physiology

Physiology

I have previous experience teaching physiology at the college level at Columbus State Community College. Human physiology is discussed using a systems approach and will address normal physiology of all the major organ systems. In learning about physiologic concepts such as homeostasis, negative feedback, thermoregulation, and acid-base balance, the student will be able to understand normal body functions and also begin to explore problems that can occur as a result of an alteration in physiology.
Study Skills

Study Skills

I believe learning is not a matter of just memorizing information but of becoming familiar with and finding associations with vocabulary terms and concepts. I would reinforce reviewing objectives presented, key terms, and available questions at the end of chapters or lessons prior to engaging in reading content. In addition, I would show students how to take notes using an outline format unless one already exists in the source they are using. I would emphasize learning key terms and concepts using flash cards.
TEAS

TEAS

I have over 25 teaching experience as a nurse educator in a variety of nursing programs (PN, diploma, ADRN, and BSN) and have used and am familiar with Assessment Technologies Institute's (ATI) various assessment products line. ATI is the author of the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) and hence I believe since I have experience in secondary education that I am quite capable of assisting students to prepare for the TEAS which is commonly used as a pre-entrance test for prospective candidates who are desiring to pursue admission to various programs providing a curriculum in nursing. I am confident as a nursing instructor in my aptitude and capabilities in facilitating a student's knowledge, comprehension, and application of concepts pertaining to the four subject areas that are assessed on the TEAS: Math, English, Science, and Language and believe that I will be able to increase someone's confidence and preparedness to pursue a career in the prestigious profession of nursing. I am hopeful that you will consider my expertise and experience as a valuable resource to assist you in your preparation as you prepare to achieve your personal and professional life goals.

Catherine was always prepared for each session. She was able to adjust to my needs, so that I could be successful. Overall great experience. I would recommend her for anyone looking to pass the NCLEX.

Knowledgeable, kind, and patient tutor

Catherine is super helpful and super knowledgeable. And super kind too. Whatever I bring to her, she knows how to help me with it and knows how to translate it into nursing language. There is always something that can be related back to nursing or science and she knows exactly how to integrate it. Right now she's helping me with evolution and she teaches it just as well as my professor does. She can go in on each slide and explain what everything is. If you are in the market for a tutor, I highly recommend Catherine.

Great Tutor

I have been working with Catherine for a few weeks now and I have been impressed with her organization as well as her attention to detail. She has communicated with me ever step of the way. She has also provided me materials that have been very helpful. I am so glad we are working together. Catherine has been able to explain complex items to me so that I can understand. She really looks at this as a team. By that, I mean that if you do your part, she will do hers to help you pass. Thank you!

Learning a lot.

I feel real comfortable with my tutor. I'm learning a lot from her. The only thing is she needs to slow down because I can't take all the information in at once especially when I never took this class before. Everything I'm learning is all new to me. I know I need to do a lot more work so I'm prepared when we meet. I can't take all that information at once. But overall I think she is excellent tutor and very educated.
