About David

Bio

I'm a retired physical chemistry professor looking to help students with their struggles. I've published over 200 papers, including many papers in science education; 12 books currently in print (most of them college-level textbooks); I even have a Great Course! My background in physical chemistry means I can help with chemistry, physics (low-level, at least!), and math (through calculus). Sorry, not so good in biology or biochemistry... I might be pricey, but I'm sure I'm worth it.

As a (ex-)physical chemistry professor, I know what it's like to struggle with math skills. In fact, two of my books are math review skills for science students. In our first meeting, I'll ask you about your math and calculator skills, because they're part of learning science.

I offer 30+ years of experience and have lots of positive feedback from students. Of course, not all students will be satisfied (and some of them blame the instructor, right?), but I have always tried to have a good rapport and understand that my job is to bring students up, not beat them down. I've worked with students from many top schools, like UC - Berkeley, CWRU, Tufts, UMichigan, and more, and I've even worked with some high school students on IB or AP classes.

I am in the Eastern time zone - please keep that in mind when you reach out.

NEW STUDENTS: Please note that if we make an initial appointment and you fail to show up, I will charge you for one-half hour of tutoring. Time is precious; please let's not waste yours or mine.

You may have found me by looking at reviews. I have never, and will never, solicit reviews, nor will I respond to them. I don't play those kinds of games. I'm more interested in working with you to learn content.

I hope I can help! And if not me, then someone else. (And if you're looking for a good organic tutor, check out my friends Stuart B. or Deanne N.) Good luck!

Algebra 1

A lot of chemistry requires math, especially algebra, so I've gotten good at it! I even wrote an algebra skills review book for first-year chemistry students that's still in print. I'm certain that I can help with any algebra problems you may have.
Chemistry

Chemistry

I was a chemistry professor for 30+ years before recently retiring. I taught physical chemistry, which combined physics, chemistry, and math through calculus, and I had to teach all aspects of it. I'm especially aware of the math skills needed to be successful in science. I have all the hardware and software I need to work online with students of all levels.

Great Tutor!

We reached out to David to help my son with Chem. He was patient and clear. Sent slides after each session. My son was well prepared for every exam. And ended his sophomore year of highschool as a strong Chem student. Thank you David!!!!

Patient tutor

David was so kind and patient with me. I can't recommend him enough. I have dyslexia so going slow and being patient is the only way I can learn. With David's help, I passed Chemistry. I can't recommend him enough!

Great professor

Really helps with the clear way he explains things and he truly helps my daughter not only understand the material, but also feel like it’s in her grasp to do well. He’s a great teacher and I’m so glad we are able to use his skills. She’s very complementary on his teaching style and way of explaining complex things to make it make sense.

Chemistry help

David helped my daughter for a number of tests over the year, most notably her final exam. He was even willing to meet with her on Memorial Day. He helped her with her study guides so she really understood what was expected of her. She ended up being very confident going in and got an A on the final and in the class. Thank you.

Outstanding tutor for Chemistry!

Recently, I made a last minute request to David to tutor my son (10th grader) in Honors Chemistry for a test that he was having the next day. Not only did David respond quickly, he was also incredibly polite and was even flexible about our meeting time! As for my son, he loved working with David! He said that David was extremely patient, kind, and very knowledgeable about all of the material. Needless to say, my son made a 94 on that test, and he requested that we book David again for any future Chemistry tutoring sessions! Bonus - David sent my son a PowerPoint presentation with all of the notes from their tutoring session so that he can use them to study for his final exam. I highly recommend David! He is the absolute highest in quality and excellence as a tutor!

David is A+ tutor

David helped me understand the concepts and execution steps for creating mixtures and solutions in the lab. I was quite scared of the math going into it but David absolved me of those fears with clear explanations and take home notes. Would absolutely work with David again!

Knowledgeable & patient tutor

David was incredible with helping my daughter study for her chemistry test. She needed to know many things for it & she felt lost. She felt she would never grasp the concepts. He also helped her understand her homework assignment. She is more confident going forward now.

Exceptionally patient and expansive depth of knowledge

My son was struggling in his advance chemistry class. We started with David a few months ago and the results are astounding. My son went from near failing to B+/A- range. Some people are just born to be teachers. That is David B. Thank you!
