As a student, I excelled and graduated summa cum laude from Baldwin Wallace College with a degree in English. During my tenure at B-W, I completed the Honors program and also completed several Education classes with corresponding field experiences. I currently am a homeschooling mother of three children ranging in age from 8 to 15 years, all with different interests and learning styles. As part of our homeschooling experience, we belong to a learning cooperative in which I share duties with other parents for offering classes of interest to participants, and I have hosted a book club and am in the process of organizing a writing workshop.
Philosophically, I believe children learn best when they are engaged in subject matter that ignites interest or because they find the subject useful. With my own children, I have used their interests to guide curriculum design, and this has been a successful approach. Learning styles vary considerably among individuals, and tutoring allows the ability to adapt subject material accordingly, something not easily accomplished in a classroom setting due to the student/teacher ratio.
