Bio

Hi, my name is Matt. I've been teaching and tutoring math for over 25 years. I've taught every level of math from 5th grade through B/C Calculus. I graduated from Brown University with a dual degree in mathematics and French Literature (cum laude). Hi, my name is Matt. I've been teaching and tutoring math for over 25 years. I've taught every level of math from 5th grade through B/C Calculus. I graduated from Brown University with a dual degree in mathematics and French Literature (cum laude). Later I earned a Master's in Math Education from City College of New York, and then a Master's in Music Composition from Hunter College.

I love teaching math, but I have significant experience as a Language Arts instructor as well. In addition to English, I can handle any level of French, and introductory Spanish. I have also tutored the ACT, SAT, SSAT, SCAT, and GRE. I'd love to tutor you in any of my areas of expertise.

My approach is to meet each student where they are, and help them build on what they already know. I understand that many subjects in school (especially math) can be frustrating or at times seem downright impossible, but I will help you approach problems or assignments in a step-by-step way. By breaking down large tasks into small ones, you will find that no obstacle is insurmountable.

Approved Subjects

Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I've taught and tutored Algebra 2 topics for over a decade, to students of a wide variety of backgrounds, from honors to remedial. I've also re-designed the Algebra 2 curriculum at a school where I taught, to make it more accessible to a wider range of students.
AMC (Competition math)

AMC (Competition math)

I worked for two years as Campus Director for Art of Problem Solving Academy. Art of Problem Solving is known for preparing students for the AMC, and implementing their curriculum required me to have a strong grasp on math competition strategies and content. I still work out of their textbooks to this day and routinely do AMC problems (and those of comparable difficulty) with my students.
Calculus

Calculus

Throughout and after college, helping students with Calculus has always remained one of my favorite parts of the job. I love Calculus for its mix of beautiful, simple ideas with complicated, meaty problems. For many students, Calculus is the first time when many of the topics they see in other courses truly make sense. My experience has helped me see where students' tend to run into trouble, what underlying concepts they may need to review, and how best to help them get on the right path with Calculus.
Composition (Music)

Composition (Music)

I have been composing music for over 11 years. I have taken many classes in composition, as well as supporting subjects such as music theory and music history. I completed a Master's in Music Composition from Hunter College in the spring of 2010. I am an active member of several composing organizations, including the New York Composers Circle and the American Composers Forum. I continue to take classes in music theory and ear training at the Juilliard School Evening Division. I am comfortable with both major music notation programs, Finale and Sibelius. Scores are available upon request.
English

English

I hold a degree in French Literature (cum laude) from Brown University. I have five years' experience as a Verbal test prep tutor, including the SAT2 in Literature. I've also taught Language Arts classes at the BEAM summer program and at Art of Problem Solving Academy Princeton.
French

French

I studied the French language from the age of seven to twenty-two, graduating cum laude in French Literature from Brown University. I've tutored a number of students in French over the years, helping them go from knowing only the very basics to being able to read full novels.
Geometry

Geometry

Geometry is one of my favorite areas of math because it combines numbers, shapes, and logical thinking. I've helped students solve some of the hardest Geometry problems, including those found on math contests such as the AMC and MathCounts. I love diving into a tricky problem, taking it apart, and trying different strategies until we've found a solution!
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

I hold a degree in Math from Brown, and a Master's in Math Education from CUNY City College. I've been tutoring or teaching math non-stop since 10th grade, and at this point have worked with students in all levels of math from 5th grade through B/C Calculus (college Calc 2). I've worked with public and private school students, and for elite programs like BEAM and AoPS. No matter what your difficulties in math, I will help you find a way to learn what you need to.
