Hi there! My name is Dennise! I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Secondary English Education from Bradley University, with a minor in Creative Writing. I have learned that the best way to help a student learn is by helping them feel safe, confident, and make boring interesting. From creating puzzles using characters to recreating Shakespeare, finding what the student enjoys most is important to help them. I am patient and caring with every student, checking in with them consistently, and willing to slow things down to help. Relationships and engagement are the most important parts of teaching/learning.
Through my entire high school experience, I tutored peers outside of class to prepare for tests: multiple choice and written. I would work one-on-one with my peers, talking through the prompts with them and helping them break down each question, helping them find the right answer without leading them to it. Through college, I tutored with the IGNITE program with Teach for America, working with children ranging from 2nd grade to 6th grade. I helped students build their vocabulary and strengthen their reading comprehension. I student taught 12th grade English as well as AP Literature. Many students made me proud as I watched them fall in love with reading for the first time, grow their skills, and gain confidence in themselves.
My goal as a teacher is to help all students become their most capable selves and feel prepared to take on the world. I am easy to reach and look forward to hearing from you!
