As a student myself, I understand the (many) difficulties that school may present—challenging topics are often taught at too fast a pace, while opportunities for additional support (i.e., extra worksheets, office hours) are limited.
Upon reflection, however, I realized that a lot of my troubles were exacerbated by my own mistakes: procrastination and inefficient study habits. By changing how I studied and receiving support from the kindest teachers, I eventually achieved 5s on all my AP exams, scored a 1540 on the SAT, and even ended my first year of college with a 4.0 GPA.
Building off what I learned from my teachers and aforementioned mistakes, I built a simple yet effective approach to tutoring. I get to know the student, namely their learning style, goals, and motivations. In doing so, I 1) recognize and help students alter maladaptive patterns of study 2) find ways to improve the student’s self-motivation to learn, and 3) teach in a manner catered towards the student’s learning style and strengths.
My clientele have ranged in age, interests, and personality—I’ve helped first-graders improve their grammar and reading skills, taught biology and chemistry to junior high students, and guided high school juniors through calculus and SAT Exam Prep. Through my approach, every student of mine was able to achieve success. To clarify, this success did not just entail better grades (although the shift from straight Bs to As or the 200+ SAT score increase were certainly welcome bonuses) but was reflected in more long-term payoffs: an increased motivation to learn and more efficient study skills.
