In addition to his research, Ian is an active orchestral musician, holding the second clarinet position with the Imperial Symphony Orchestra in Lakeland, FL, and performs frequently with the Ocala Symphony Orchestra. He has also performed with the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, Gainesville Orchestra, and Holland (MI) Symphony Orchestra.

Ian has recently presented a recital at the American Single Reed Summit where he premiered new works for clarinet. As a soloist, Ian was a Semi-Finalist in the International Clarinet Association Young Artist Competition in 2019. Ian also toured the southwest United States with the Grand Valley State University New Music Ensemble during his undergraduate degree. While with this group, Ian worked with leading contemporary composers such as David Biedenbender, David Lang and Armando Bayolo to perform and premiere new works.

Ian received his Master’s degree from the University of Florida and his Bachelor’s degree from Grand Valley State University. His former teachers include Mitchell Estrin, Arthur Campbell, Joel Schekman, Scott Anderson and Martin Van Maanen. In addition to performing and teaching clarinet, Ian enjoys composing electronic music and spending time with his wife, Katlin and their dog Gabby.

Music Production

Music Production

I have studied electronic music composition in Ableton Live for 4+ years and taught it for the last 2+ years. I studied traditional composition during my undergraduate degree as well as clarinet. I have experience teaching beginners to intermediate students on topics from DAW production and composition, sound design, songwriting, mixing, and mastering. Additionally, I have studied with leading electronic musicians in the EDM industry to better understand that style and techniques. I also have my own artist project where I am self released and my music has been featured on numerous blogs, YouTube channels, and major Spotify playlists. I currently am using Ableton Live 11 Suite, but can work with you on any version of Ableton.

Highly Recommended!

Ian is an awesome teacher. He's extremely knowledgeable, engaging, and patient, especially with kids. His ability to explain complex concepts in an accessible way makes learning both enjoyable and effective for my 12 year old son who is just learning to play the clarinet. Having been an online educator myself for many years, I can confidently say that Ian excels in the virtual classroom. His teaching style is interactive and encouraging, creating an environment where my son feels comfortable asking questions and staying engaged.

knowledgeable and thorough tutor

We were skeptical about learning music through online first but now I am so thankful that we took the chance. Ian is a very thorough and detail oriented tutor. My son is at advanced-intermediate level and met Ian for three lessons so far, he had already learned so much from Ian!

Great Teacher

Ian does a great job of diagnosing, has a talent for using metaphors kids understand, and is very encouraging. I appreciate all he brings and his reflections so I can support my son at home.

Our saving grace

We contacted Dr. McIntyre to assist with my son's solo clarinet performance. My son was getting frustrated during practice runs and I felt hopeless seeing him struggle. I don't know how to help him but to search for someone who can pay attention to him immediately. Dr McIntyre helped him polish a few things and was a huge cheerleader for him. He was patient and understanding but also was very direct with his instructions. On the day of the competition, Dr. McIntyre helped my son picked out the reeds and with the warm up. It didn't matter that Dr. McIntyre is doing all of the teaching online. My son felt ready enough after 6 sessions that they were together and even if those are virtual lessons. We highly recommend Dr. McIntyre to anyone.

Extremely knowledgeable

Ian is an amazing tutor. He can sense right away what is going on and he has taught my grandson how to make simple adjustments that produce a better quality sound. Ian provides lots of practice techniques that also help him “practice” better. My grandson feels very comfortable asking Ian questions. He really enjoys working with him.

Highly recommended, patient, organized and has great communication.

Ian is very thorough and methodical during his lessons. He made our son feel comfortable and was easy to work with. He quickly assessed our son and started helping him immediately with some small changes that made a huge difference. He works in a very efficient manner and didn't waste any time getting right into finding where our sons skills were and what needed to be improved. He connected with us and provided sheet music for our son to practice. After the lesson, he sent us a report detailing what he thought regarding our sons skills, areas for improvement, what he covered in the lesson and reminders of what to work on prior to the next lesson. We will continue to use Ian for our sons lessons going forward. A great teacher with a positive attitude that really motivates the student to play well.
