About Kathy

Bio

I have a PhD from University of Phoenix, a Master's from Northern Kentucky University, and an Education degree from Thomas More College. I have been a teacher for over 30 years. I have been a private tutor for longer than that. I love kids and young adults, and my passion is to help them succeed. I have a PhD from University of Phoenix, a Master's from Northern Kentucky University, and an Education degree from Thomas More College. I have been a teacher for over 30 years. I have been a private tutor for longer than that. I love kids and young adults, and my passion is to help them succeed. When one of my students understands something because of the way I have explained it, I feel like my mission in life has been accomplished. I have a way of connecting with students, building their self-esteem, and explaining things so they can understand. My students really like me, and I really like them. More importantly, they achieve their goals with my help.

I am an outstanding math tutor because I know how to explain math in a simpler way than most students learn it at school. I can help students decipher word problems when they don't know where to start. I have "tricks" to help students remember formulas, multiplication facts, and more. I have been told by students that I can explain how to do a problem in two minutes that it took their teacher two weeks to teach. I love math, and I am very good at it. More importantly, I am good at teaching my students how to do their math to improve their grades and/or scores on tests.

I have been tutoring the ACT - all sections - for at least a dozen years. When students work with me, they typically increase their overall score by 3-5 points, although it can be more. I am especially proficient in Reading and English as I teach these subjects at the college level and have two master's degrees and a doctorate in English and education. I can also supply references if you would like. I have helped hundreds of students over the years to reach their ACT goals for certain schools, programs, and scholarships. I am qualified to work with students with ADD or ADHD because I have a teaching certificate from the state of Ohio with a supplemental certificate in special education. I have a master's and a doctorate in education. I have spent 22 years working in classrooms ranging from middle school to college where I have encountered, worked with, and helped hundreds of students with ADD or ADHD succeed. I have even helped create and implement their IEPs or 504s.

I have tutored students in Common Core math for as many years as Common Core standards have been in use in the state of Ohio. I have also substitute taught for all grades using Common Core math standards. I am very aware and confident of the common core standards and my ability to tutor them in math.

I have tutored several students for high school placement tests, and they have all passed the test after working with me. If you were to look at my materials right now, you would plainly see that I have a practice book entitled COOP/HSPT. Between my experience tutoring for over 30 years and my classroom teaching, I am qualified to tutor this subject.

I am a certified teacher for grades K-8 in the state of Ohio. I have taught these grades in the classroom (in public and private schools) for 12 years. I have taught math, reading, writing, spelling, science, and more. I have also substitute taught for all of these grades for every subject for six years. In addition, I have tutored hundreds of students in grades K-6 in every subject possible.

I have tutored homeschooled students throughout my entire career. One of those students was with me for over 13 years until she was ready to take the GED. I homeschooled my own daughter several times and taught her to read, write, and do basic math, which is something the public schools were unable to do. Many parents who homeschool their children bring them to me for a specific subject or two, typically math and/or reading.

I have taken and passed all of the Praxis tests myself. I have also tutored students who needed to take and pass the Praxis tests. I am especially proud of one student who took and failed the math Praxis test three times before she came to me. Instead of taking more and more practice tests, we retraced our steps, filled in her math learning gaps, and she passed on her fourth try!

Exceptional tutor with great knowledge

Kathy is an amazing tutor with the uncanny ability to teach to the brain with so much patience. She knows how to teach a subject matter in more than one way and when that light bulb goes off, she's great with giving praise. I've always struggled and been intimidated with Math. Somehow, Kathy has made me very comfortable with learning Math and even feeling eager to meet with her each session to show her how much I've grasped it, thanks to her. She's a warm person and very easy to go to with questions. She is ALWAYS on time and always has a smile to start the session. She's built my confidence and desire to learn more. You get more than your money's worth by signing up to work with her.
