Even though I teach Science at the college level, I always enjoy one on one interactions with high school or college level students, where I can help that person achieve the goals and successes they desire. Most people just lack the confidence, and I so enjoy watching them gain confidence and achieve what they want to.

I have a broad education with a degree in Chemistry, minor in Math, and a PhD in Biology, so I think this can help me integrate subjects for the student to both engage their interest and find a starting point of strength for them. Students generally comment they find my explanations very clear, with many real life examples, that really helps them to understand the important concepts. I actually work hard at this, to make sure to explain the subject several different ways so that the student can grasp the material well.

One of my main objectives as well is to increase the "academic muscle" of any student I help, so that they are more confident in their own abilities as they move forward, and can make real progress toward their goals.

Study Skills

I teach open access college freshman, no entrance requirements. I see students come in ill prepared to do college work, and have worked very hard to help them acquire the skills that will help them succeed in any career path they choose, so I have some idea of where they need to be as college freshman. I regularly transform freshman A&P students into nursing students (one of whom just informed me she is making an A in nursing school!) The secret ingredients are old-fashioned reading and essay writing skills, especially for this generation of student. They must train to increase their working memory, to begin to understand mastery of subject (rather than factoid memorization). I feel I could adapt my methods very easily to any age group by using the appropriate level study materials. Who better to prepare students for college, than a teacher who sees what is lacking in students and has demonstrated successes in helping them build study skills that will allow them to be successful in any career path?

Knowledgeable and Great Explainer

I am a freshman in college and was struggling with molecular interactions in bio because I didn't take General Chemistry before. Kathy helped me refresh my chemistry knowledge from high school so I could succeed in the course!

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Kathleen does a great job of breaking down the material, explaining concepts and weaving in personal stories to make biology more interesting. I highly recommend her and will continue to use her to help my 14 year-old with her Honors Biology class. Wish we’d found her sooner!

Vivian, 5 lessons with Kathleen

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

My daughter enjoyed her session with Kathy who helped her to understand in greater detail more of the anatomy concepts that she is being taught in school. She was very patient and encouraging. We look forward to our next meeting with her.

Very patient!

Kathleen was very patient and took things slow for me when I needed to. She helped me learn things in a different and logical way- very helpful!

Rachel, 4 lessons with Kathleen

Excellent Instructor

Biology is the course Kathleen has been helping me with and her lessons are clear, concise and extremely well explained. I recommend Kathleen to high school or college students.

Excellent in every way

Wonderful tutor that is easy to understand. She has been patient and accommodating in every way. Well DONE! I would recommend anyone with a biology class to use her.

Greg, 17 lessons with Kathleen

Great teacher!!

She explained things in simpler terms so he better understood the lesson. She had her own teaching material that really helped.

Missy, 9 lessons with Kathleen

Great Biology tutor

I wish I would of found Kathleen sooner for my daughter Gabby for her Biology class. She spent time with Gabby thought she was extremely helpful. She has always made herself available and answers any questions I may have. Look forward to working with her to help my daughter be successful.

Odaliz, 1 lesson with Kathleen

Great Darwinian Medicine tutor

Although it has only been session with Kathy, my college student said she was extremely knowledgeable about a unique subject. He also stated that her teaching style was very easy to follow. He definitely will continue working with Kathy!
