I have been tutoring for 17 years, primarily for ACT and SAT test preparation in English, Reading, and essay writing. For the first five years, I tutored with The Princeton Review. I then became an independent tutor when I needed more flexible hours and scheduling.
Reading and English have always been prominent in my life. In addition to being an avid lifelong reader, I majored in journalism at Bowling Green State University and spent several years after graduation writing for various magazines and newspapers. I then returned to school to get my teaching certificate in elementary education. For two years after receiving my certification, I taught essay and creative writing to fifth and sixth graders.
A move to a different state prompted me to return to writing, and I worked as a technical writer in the software industry for several years. I then worked part time at a local public library for 12 years. In 2016, I received my Master's in Library and Information Sciences from Kent State University. I now work full time at a local public library as an Adult Services specialist.
Students who work with me normally increase their ACT scores between three and five points. I use a methodical, step-by-step process that helps students, especially those who don't like to read, break down grammar and reading passages in an easy-to-understand way, which allows them to better identify main ideas, look for relationships between questions, and quickly find relevant information. Many former students have told me that, while reading is still not something they enjoy, they have a better appreciation for how to analyze reading passages, which helps them immensely in their college experience. Laura P. is nothing short of remarkable! I had hired her to help increase my son's SAT score for Reading. His Reading score after a few tutoring sessions with Laura: 800! Achieving this perfect score has done wonders my sixteen year old's morale and self confidence. I've recommended her to everybody I know with eleventh graders. Thank you, Laura.
Our session focused on ACT Reading - she gave helpful hints and strategies to help improve score on upcoming test. It was a worthwhile session and we will be scheduling another. Would recommend to others.
Laura taught me reading and english. After 5 sections with her my score went from 18 to 25 in english. She teaches by not just telling the answer but explaining the reason for correct answer and then teaching strategy to apply.
She takes the time to explain my errors and show me several alternatives for correction. She is tutoring me in writing and grammar and I can see a great improvement!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
