Approved Subjects

ADHD

ADHD

I am already approved for Special Needs. Currently, my WyzAnt student is a 8th grader with ADHD. I helped him, his parents and the school adjust his Individual Education Plan to meet his needs. We were able to advocate for him to be placed in two special needs classes. He successfully finished 7th grade with no need for summer school. Together, we work on simple math problems and reading comprehension by illustrating stories and using math to support some of the activities (e.g. travel costs and budgeting). When his attention span is short, we find different ways to refocus and gain more energy such as tossing a stress ball while just talking or quizzing on math problems.
English

English

English is my native language. I exceeded in Language Arts from elementary to graduate school. My 8th grade English teacher and I play Words with Friends game with her regularly. Sometimes, I let her win a game or too. I enjoy helping students understand and apply the rules and its many exceptions so they can learn to communicate via written and verbal methods.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

I am trained through Literacy Unlimited, Inc., a non-profit organization to train volunteers to assist English for Speakers of Other Languages students. I also provide private tutoring for adults who need to improve their English skills for speaking, writing, standardized testing, etc. Some students I have been successful in helping them apply, interview and accept English speaking jobs. I have successfully assisted students who speak Egypt/Arabic, Chinese/Mandarin, Portuguese/Brazil and Indian/Hindu.
Reading

Reading

I can find the strengths and interests of students to help them enjoy reading by using creative methods to engage them and increase comprehension.
Special Needs

Special Needs

Throughout my professional career, I have successfully worked with special needs clients and their families. In social services, I trained volunteers to recognize the special needs of at-risk children so they can make referrals to the appropriate resources. Additionally, I planned and executed events for at-risk children to improve their socialization skills. In my personal life, my oldest daughter also struggled in school until I got her tested and qualified her for the IEP (Individual Education Plan). She is unusually bright but tends to be an underachiever. She started out in parochial school, but when I moved her to public school to better meet her educational needs, she blossomed to become eligible for the gifted program. With the help of her teachers, the school and her parents, she graduated at the top of her class with honors. She even took college courses during high school and obtained her associated degree six months after high school graduation. Additionally, I became involved with the school as a parent advocate to assist other parents who had children with special needs. With my special needs experience at both the professional and personal level, I know I will be able to assist you with your special needs requests.
Writing

Writing

I have successfully worked with students who are reluctant to read or write. Through using their strengths and interests, I help them gain confidence and the skills needed to reach their academic goals.

Best thing we ever did.

I want to thank Deborah for being so patient and understanding with my special needs grandson. I haven't met her but what my daughter has told me about her is wonderful. She has helped my grandson and my daughter so much. And they and myself look forward to working with her for as long as needed. I think he is going to benefit from these sessions so much. And because of this he is going to be a better kid because he will be happier with himself. When a 13 year old boy says he really likes his tutor that just goes to show how special she is.
