Lovely to e-meet you! My name is Shannon. I have a bachelor’s degree in psychology, and a minor in English. I am completing a graduate program at Columbia University, Teachers College, so that I can earn a master’s degree in psychology as well. My passion for psychology has led me to become a proud member of the Columbia University chapter of The International Honor Society in Psychology. Throughout my life I have prioritized my education, as I believe that an education is one of the most important tools that an individual can equip themselves with. This is why I started tutoring! My two degrees in psychology have deepened my emotional intelligence, and further developed my skills in communication and perception, improving by ability to home in on the individual needs of each student that I work with. My training has also shown me that tutoring is about attending to both the educational and psychological needs of my students. I try to reflect these beliefs through my tutoring approach, by making my lessons plans engaging as well as insightful, and delivering them with through cutting edge techniques. I introduce topics in fun, stimulating, and practical ways that are applicable to the real-world, everyday scenarios that my students may encounter. I always make sure that my students have time to ask questions and practice the material on their own during our sessions.
I tutored students of all ages throughout high school and then classmates during my undergraduate years in college. It was then that I developed an affinity for teaching and the interpersonal relationships that I was able to form with my students. During that time, I worked with countless international students on improving their English. I tutored small groups of 6-8 students and provided one-on-one English lessons as well. After college I began to focus on tutoring English through various programs, specializing in reading, writing and vocabulary, and now tutor the international students at Columbia University.
