Hi there! My name is Jamila, a civil and environmental engineer with over a decade of experience supporting students from elementary through high school. Throughout my career, I worked as an afterschool math tutor and have volunteered extensively with local schools through the Society of Women Engineers, where I helped students build confidence in STEM subjects. I worked with a wide range of learners, from younger students developing foundational math skills to high school students preparing for exams. I truly enjoy helping each student find their own path to understanding.
My tutoring approach is centered on patience, encouragement, and adaptability. I believe that every student learns differently, so I tailor my sessions to match each individual pace and learning style. Whether we are breaking down a challenging math concept step by step or building strong study habits, my goal is to create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. I also like to connect what students are learning to real-world applications, especially through my background in engineering, so the material feels more engaging and relevant.
Academically, I completed advanced coursework in high school, including AP English Literature and Biology, and went on to study civil and environmental engineering in college, where I built a strong foundation in math, science, and problem-solving. In addition to my formal education, I am passionate about continuous learning and been studying European Portuguese for the past three years and am currently progressing from a B1 to B2 level on the CEFR scale through programs at the University of Coimbra and the University of Aveiro. This experience has given me a deeper appreciation for the learning process and helps me relate to students who may be tackling challenging subjects themselves.
I look forward to supporting you or your student and helping build both skills and confidence along the way!
