I am Luis, a current chemical and biomolecular engineering undergraduate student in their second year as a transfer student. Previously, I graduated from a two-year college with two Associate’s degrees, one in Liberal Arts, Math, and Science, and the other in Liberal Arts Social Science Honors. I was able to get the honors distinction for my degree after being accepted into the honors cohort during my second semester in college. During this time, I was able to get involved in clubs, organizations, research, and peer tutoring. I was a math and science peer tutor for a year. Tutoring ended up being one of the main factors that later got me recognized with the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence. Additionally, I was able to get into a competitive program that helped students transferring to a four-year college.
Tutoring was undeniably one of my favorite experiences. I would tutor students in Biology 1 & 2, General Chemistry 1 & 2, Engineering Physics 1 & 2, and Calculus 1 & 2. Helping others and seeing them succeed brought joy to me.
One thing that I always keep in mind is that students come from different backgrounds of knowledge. This is why I always try to engage with students at the beginning of sessions to understand where they stand. This makes a big part of my tutoring approach, as it sets up my students for success. Additionally, I try to introduce the material in a creative way and provide tools that help students remember the material. I also leave time in between topics for students to do some practice problems on their own, and then I review it with them and answer any questions they might have. These exercises are adjusted depending on the time the student has and also their objectives.
I really care about the students I help and want to provide them with the best service possible. Please reach out to me with any questions, suggestions, or to schedule a session, and I will do my best to reply to them as fast as possible.
