African American Studies

African American Studies

As a Comparative Ethnic Studies instructor at Washington State University, I have taught multiple semesters of “Race and Racism in the United States,” a course that explores the historical and contemporary experiences of African Americans (and other marginalized groups) through an interdisciplinary lens. My teaching emphasizes critical race theory, cultural analysis, and the systemic impact of anti-Blackness. I guide students in examining slavery, segregation, civil rights, and the ongoing fight for racial justice in the U.S. With a strong academic foundation and an engaging teaching style, I help learners connect theory to real-world issues.
College Counseling

College Counseling

I have worked with students on the high school and college level to develop best strategies to refine their college essays, interviews, and overall applications. Personally, I was accepted into Ivy League institutions such as Columbia and Dartmouth, and I currently serve as an admissions interviewer for an Ivy League school. My goal is to help you find your unique voice, organize yourself to decrease the stress of the college application timeline, and stand out through your application materials. As a patient and flexible educator, I am excited to work with you to help you get your applications completed on time while using your unique voice.

Creative Writing

As a Ph.D. with a master’s degree in Creative Writing from Dartmouth College, I bring a strong understanding of storytelling, structure, voice, and the writing process. I served as President of the Dartmouth Writers’ Society and as an Associate Editor for the Dartmouth MALS academic journal. I work with students across a range of creative writing forms, including short stories, poetry, personal essays, and more. My approach combines thoughtful feedback with practical strategies to help writers strengthen their ideas, develop their individual voice, and refine their craft. Whether you're writing for a class, a competition, publication, or simply for yourself, I’m here to help you grow as a confident and effective writer.

As a Ph.D. educator and experienced English/writing tutor, I support elementary students with reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, writing, and academic confidence. I help younger learners build stronger sentences, organize their ideas, understand what they read, and communicate more clearly. My lessons are patient, structured, and encouraging, with activities tailored to each student’s grade level, attention span, and learning needs.

Whether you're preparing for a formal panel or a one-on-one conversation, I’m here to help you show up as your best self.
Literature

Literature

I received my bachelors degree in English Literature from Binghamton University. Some of my favorite books to discuss are Jane Eyre, Their Eyes Were Watching God, The Bluest Eye, The Scarlet Letter, and The Great Gatsby. However, I consider myself to be a very quick reader due to my extensive graduate work; I can discuss most works of literature of this caliber if given a few days of prep time. I also have direct experience with other AP Lit/Lang novels such as The Poisonwood Bible, Fahrenheit 451, Romeo and Juliet, Go Ask Alice, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lack, A Raisin in the Sun, Of Mice and Men, The Catcher in the Rye, The Glass Menagerie, Pride and Prejudice, Emma, The Purple Hibiscus, and Atonement.

I specialize in helping students craft compelling, authentic personal statements that stand out to admissions committees. With a PhD and Ivy League background, I bring deep expertise in storytelling, editing, and structure. I’ve successfully guided students applying to top colleges, scholarships, and honors programs. My approach combines emotional intelligence with clear, strategic coaching tailored to each student's voice and goals.

This distinction designated me as scoring in the top 3% of more than 160,000 Black Americans who requested entry to the 2014 program through our PSAT scores. Through this program, I was referred to about 1,5000 U.S. colleges and universities to recognize my potential for academic success.

My public speaking support focuses on organization, vocal clarity, confidence, and helping students sound polished without sounding over-rehearsed.
Sociology

Sociology

I hold a Ph.D. in American Studies and Culture and an M.A. in American Studies from Columbia University. I have also taught Comparative Ethnic Studies at the university level, with coursework examining race, identity, inequality, and social structures in the United States. My interdisciplinary academic background allows me to help students understand sociological concepts related to intersectionality, culture, religion, power, and social institutions. I work with students to break down complex theories, strengthen their understanding of course material, and develop clear, well-supported written responses and essays.
Thesis Writing

Thesis Writing

I hold a Ph.D. and two master’s degrees, giving me extensive firsthand experience with the research and writing process at the graduate level. Having completed multiple long-form academic projects, including a doctoral dissertation, I understand how challenging it can be to develop an argument, manage extensive research, and organize complex ideas into a cohesive final project. I help students strengthen their arguments, improve structure, and develop an appropriate scholarly voice and tone. I can support students at various stages of the process, from early planning and outlining to revising individual chapters and polishing a final draft. I especially enjoy helping students break overwhelming research and writing projects into clear, achievable steps.

Amazing law school essay Tutor

She has helped me so much with my law school personal statement and she’s super patient. I really appreciate that she takes the time to make suggestions and improvements for the paper.

Tutor responded:

Thank you so much, Kayla! I’ve really enjoyed working with you on your personal statement so far. I’m excited to keep supporting you as we finish up your materials. Law schools are lucky to have you in the pipeline!

The absolute best investment I have made for my law school application process!

I found Ashley when applying for law schools, perplexed and intimidated by the process, her guidance proved vital during this experience. Not only does she have a stellar understanding of the English language, she does independent research regarding the document type to ensure you are meeting standards and protocols for the schools requirements. If you are thinking about hiring Ashley, please think no more. She has proven to be a strong asset, constantly pushing for depth and maintaining only objective improvements. She showed true distinction in her abilities immediately. We carefully crafted my personal statement, diversity statement, and gpa addendum leaving me beyond satisfied with our results. She brought my words to life, implemented color into my stale drafts, and made all statements intertwine to create a holistic narrative. Do yourself a favor and utilize Ashley’s services to get top quality from someone who shines as amongst the best in her field.

Skilled and supportive tutor

Ashley is an exceptional tutor! She's very organized, has clear communication skills, and is great at being supportive for academic essays. I wouldn't be finishing my B.A. in University (as someone with ADHD/currently navigating heavy grief) without her immensely skilled support. I can see her skills translating well for a range of ages and educational levels. She has a really good balance of firm boundaries and compassionate flexibility that I find really refreshing and useful since some other tutors either tend to overextend or be too rigid. I trust Ashley to engage within her capacity while being mindful of my needs. Thank you!!

Wonderful and Patient Tutor

Ashley is an incredible, knowledgeable, and well prepared ELA tutor. My 5th grade son was struggling in ELA, especially vocabulary and writing. As she started tutoring him, I saw the passion and dedication she integrates during her sessions. I realized that she is the best support for my son. She looked at what he really needs to focus on and she started working on. Her sessions have made a huge difference with my son's level in writing &vocabulary. My son loves his sessions with Ashley. She makes him engaged in the learning process while she's been patient and encouraging. This is truly wonderful because it gave him the confidence to write using well built structures, new vocabulary, correct grammar and punctuation. I am so grateful for Ashley's incredible support for my son.
