Hi, I’m Ashley! I am a Ph.D. candidate in American Studies & Culture currently working on my dissertation. One of my biggest goals in life is to help students achieve their educational pursuits. I hold a B.A. in English Literature from Binghamton University, an M.A. in Creative Writing from Dartmouth College, and an M.A. in American Studies from Columbia University.

I am currently a part-time college instructor in Comparative Ethnic Studies, and nothing makes me happier than seeing my students engage with concepts they once found challenging. As one parent recently shared, my sessions “made a huge difference” in her child’s writing and vocabulary skills, giving him the confidence to write with “well-built structures, new vocabulary, correct grammar, and punctuation.”

My lessons combine targeted skill-building with engaging, interactive dialogue. Whether you are preparing a standout college admissions essay, strengthening academic writing, or building vocabulary and grammar skills, I tailor each session to meet your needs and make the process both effective and enjoyable. I also bring experience as a creative writing editor, and I can support projects across any genre.

I am easy to reach and will always provide a fast response. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or to schedule a lesson!

African American Studies

African American Studies

As a Comparative Ethnic Studies instructor at Washington State University, I have taught multiple semesters of “Race and Racism in the United States,” a course that explores the historical and contemporary experiences of African Americans (and other marginalized groups) through an interdisciplinary lens. My teaching emphasizes critical race theory, cultural analysis, and the systemic impact of anti-Blackness. I guide students in examining slavery, segregation, civil rights, and the ongoing fight for racial justice in the U.S. With a strong academic foundation and an engaging teaching style, I help learners connect theory to real-world issues.
College Counseling

College Counseling

I have worked with students on the high school and college level to develop best strategies to refine their college essays, interviews, and overall applications. Personally, I was accepted into Ivy League institutions such as Columbia and Dartmouth, and I currently serve as an admissions interviewer for an Ivy League school. My goal is to help you find your unique voice, organize yourself to decrease the stress of the college application timeline, and stand out through your application materials. As a patient and flexible educator, I am excited to work with you to help you get your applications completed on time while using your unique voice.
Creative Writing

Creative Writing

As a Ph.D. Candidate with a master’s degree in Creative Writing from Dartmouth College, I bring a deep understanding of storytelling, structure, and voice. I served as President of the Dartmouth Writers’ Society and as an Associate Editor for the Dartmouth MALS academic journal. I work with students on all forms of creative writing - short stories, poetry, personal essays, and more - offering thoughtful feedback and strategies to help refine their craft. Whether you're writing for a class, a competition, or for yourself, I’m here to support your growth.

As a Ph.D. Candidate, I am continuing on with my writing endeavors as I currently work on my dissertation.

Whether you're writing for class or personal passion, I can help elevate your work.
Interview Prep

With extensive experience conducting admissions interviews for Dartmouth College, I specialize in helping students prepare for both college and scholarship interviews with confidence and authenticity. I also regularly participate in and coach pageant interviews, offering unique insight into high-pressure, high-stakes interview environments. I work with clients to sharpen their speaking skills, develop strong responses, and present themselves with clarity and poise. Whether you're preparing for a formal panel or a one-on-one conversation, I’m here to help you show up as your best self.
Literature

Literature

I received my bachelors degree in English Literature from Binghamton University. Some of my favorite books to discuss are Jane Eyre, Their Eyes Were Watching God, The Bluest Eye, The Scarlet Letter, and The Great Gatsby. However, I consider myself to be a very quick reader due to my extensive graduate work; I can discuss most works of literature of this caliber if given a few days of prep time. I also have direct experience with other AP Lit/Lang novels such as The Poisonwood Bible, Fahrenheit 451, Romeo and Juliet, Go Ask Alice, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lack, A Raisin in the Sun, Of Mice and Men, The Catcher in the Rye, The Glass Menagerie, Pride and Prejudice, Emma, The Purple Hibiscus, and Atonement.

I specialize in helping students craft compelling, authentic personal statements that stand out to admissions committees. With a PhD and Ivy League background, I bring deep expertise in storytelling, editing, and structure. I’ve successfully guided students applying to top colleges, scholarships, and honors programs. My approach combines emotional intelligence with clear, strategic coaching tailored to each student's voice and goals.

PSAT

In high school, I was given the distinction of being a National Achievement Outstanding Participant within the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. This distinction designated me as scoring in the top 3% of more than 160,000 Black Americans who requested entry to the 2014 program through our PSAT scores. Through this program, I was referred to about 1,5000 U.S. colleges and universities to recognize my potential for academic success.

My dissertation revolves around the socio-political and cultural aspects of intersectionality, religion, and mental health in the U.S.

Wonderful and Patient Tutor

Ashley is an incredible, knowledgeable, and well prepared ELA tutor. My 5th grade son was struggling in ELA, especially vocabulary and writing. As she started tutoring him, I saw the passion and dedication she integrates during her sessions. I realized that she is the best support for my son. She looked at what he really needs to focus on and she started working on. Her sessions have made a huge difference with my son's level in writing &vocabulary. My son loves his sessions with Ashley. She makes him engaged in the learning process while she's been patient and encouraging. This is truly wonderful because it gave him the confidence to write using well built structures, new vocabulary, correct grammar and punctuation. I am so grateful for Ashley's incredible support for my son.
