Hi! My name is David. I was graduated summa cum laude from St. John Fisher College with a B.S. degree in Mathematics and earned a Ph.D. in Biophysical Chemistry at the University of Rochester. I taught a preparatory chemistry course at Monroe Community College and as a sabbatical replacement I taught general chemistry and biochemistry at Hobart and William Smith Colleges.

I was an instructor for 24 years at the University of Rochester where I managed the general chemistry laboratories, was a teaching assistant for general chemistry lab sections, helped train other teaching assistants, responded to student emails, and led recitations for general chemistry lecture classes. I taught lectures, laboratories, recitation sections, and lab lectures for both summer semesters of general chemistry at the University of Rochester. I believe I am qualified to tutor students in high school, AP, and first-year general college chemistry. I am also well prepared to help students understand their laboratory experiments.

My student-centered teaching style assists students in focusing on chemistry. I engage students by directly asking questions and having them work out solutions. Using pictures and graphs makes ideas more concrete. I write many notes on the board. When students write down these notes, they are better able to remember and later review the concepts. I present information logically and patiently, and carefully explain ideas. Teaching in this way requires more time, but I hope my students learn more and apply it confidently.

I enjoy learning and teaching chemistry, and would like my knowledge and experience to help students learn in a calm low-stress way that makes sense to them. In my three months of tutoring, I have realized that I value and appreciate creating relationships with students. As we have more tutoring sessions together, I understand them better and am better able to encourage and support them academically. They also find it easier to ask me questions.

kind, patient and effective teacher!

As I have just started my general chemistry II summer course, I was feeling completely confused, stressed, and overwhelmed by nearly all course criteria covered within the first week. After my session with David, I began to feel my academic confidence slowly coming back to me. He is a kind and patient tutor that has a lot of teaching experience, and therefore, conveys the complexities of chemistry in a way for anybody to thrive in such a challenging course. I highly recommend if you are struggling like I was! Thanks David!

Lab Report Superman, the most caring, patient tutor who genuinely wants you to learn ,

Before David, I was struggling to understand steps for my first General Chem and was totally lost on making sense of the chicken scratch of data collected. It was David's expertise, having many years of making similar labs, that finally made my understanding complete and gives me a bird's eye view of what each activity's big idea is. By the end of each session I could grasp the Why's behind steps and catch things others hadn't. One session I found that I had all my questions with 20 minutes to spare, he did not charge for the remaining. Other times I find myself with a few more questions and he kindly extended past time. I never feel embarrassed to ask questions with David's kindness and patience; he goes above and beyond to make learning Chemistry a peaceful experience, and I personally like how he writes on a physical, actual board, it's an added bonus to the welcoming atmosphere to learn. He has a great balance of equipping with information that I need, as well as allowing me to discover things myself—the Goldilocks teaching approach. David's comprehensive notes after each session feels like receiving a gift of two sessions for the price as one. With other tutors, sometimes I'd forgotten some of what another tutor and I reviewed or I'd be confused reviewing my own notes, but without fail David kindly provides a complete breakdown of everything we discussed in an easy to read format. If you want to meet the most caring, patient tutor who genuinely wants you to learn and kindly translates their years of expertise into welcoming lessons for even beginners, it's David. It's evident in the extraordinary distances he goes above in beyond in lesson preparation, comprehensive reviews, and every interaction.

Incredible knowledge of the subject, able to come at problems from different perspectives and paths, patient tutor, and aids in anxiety help.

David has become an invaluable aid for me in my chemistry course. I came back to Chemistry after almost six years and was incredibly nervous about the new material and the level of the course as well as it’s pacing. He helped me to understand the concepts and gave me information behind the principles. It takes me a bit of time to understand new concepts and he is incredibly patient with me as well as willing to go over things again and again until I get them. In addition to the chemistry course help, he aided me in my nerves towards the course and is always able to listen to my fears and concerns whether its towards the concepts or in my ability to do them. I highly recommend David as a tutor for anyone who needs help in chemistry. Whether they’re tackling higher-level concepts or coming to the subject with a new perspective and lesser experience.

Well-Prepared and Knowledgable Tutor

David came very prepared to our thermochemistry tutoring session. He had already worked out the questions I sent him and he took his time carefully explaining them to me. Overall I had a really helpful session.
