About MONA

As an experienced educator at the middle / high school level, I have successful engagements with the emphasis placed on goal setting, prioritizing and event management. These are skills I use personally and professionally. I am equally comfortable teaching one-on-one as well as in the group setting. Tutoring location is flexible.

I have worked as a substitute teacher in the Wantagh School District for over five years teaching the following subjects: physical science, living environment, Italian, and pre-algebra. Privately, I have been tutoring SAT/ACT/GMAT students, middle and high school students in chemistry, algebra, living environment and elementary school students in math.

The parents of the students that I have worked with have been pleased with the one to one attention that I have given their children and with the results. I personalize my instruction to the students' interests to make the subject matter more relevant to their point of reference.

I am passionate about learning and enjoy when the individuals pick up on this enthusiasm and revisit the subject matter we are studying with a new perspective.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I have a strong background in math. I have experience tutoring algebra 1, geometry, and algebra 2. I feel that I can take the more complex problems and illustrate how to break them down into smaller units in order to answer the questions on the ACT exam.

Algebra 1

Algebra consists of many of the subject areas that will all have studied since Elementary School. Whether it be ratios, negative and positive numbers, solving for variables, plotting points or computing area or converting units, they all unify and are important to understand when studying Algebra. When working with a student in this discipline, I make sure that the building blocks of Math are strong and then build upon these concepts. I try to use real life examples when doing problems so that the student can see that Algebra plays a strong role in our everyday lives.

American History

I have over nine years experience tutoring United States History. I am an avid reader of history: domestic and global. When I work with a student my approach is to show them the application of trends and events and how they influenced history.

I have a degree in medicine and have tutored anatomy before and have the reference books.

I have a PhD in Biological Sciences and a masters in Bionutrition. Having a strong background in chemistry, I can correlate material between the different life sciences. Having a strong background in the sciences, I can take a more complex concept and break it down into its microscopic and macroscopic terms.

Having a strong background in the Biological Sciences, when I am tutoring Chemistry, I can use examples from Biology to help explain different relationships. Chemistry is built upon overlapping concepts starting with the structure of the atom, to the Periodic Table, to types of bonds, Nuclear and Organic Chemistry. I take the basic concepts, make sure that the student understands them and then I build upon these concepts. I use diagrams, charts, and examples from real life to help give the topics in Chemistry different perspectives and help in the learning process.

I have been tutoring the Critical Reading and Writing sections of the SAT for several years. This standardized test emphasizes sentence structure, mechanics and punctuation as well as reading comprehension. I also have been tutoring the ACT which has the same type of emphasis on mechanics and reading. Additionally, having lived in Europe and learned two languages, I also know the importance of speaking and auditory comprehension. I have personal experience in tutoring Italian and what methods work or don't work while trying to become fluent in another language. I feel that I have both the personal and professional experience in being able to help a student learn English as a second language.

Having a strong background in math, I feel that I can take the different concepts in geometry such as proofs, coordinate proofs, theorems and angle relationships and polygon problems and break them down into smaller concepts. I can use examples from algebra, real life situations and science topics to explain the material in diverse ways. I use diagrams and worksheets when tutoring along with learning how the individual student processes information.

Having a strong background in math and verbal skills as well as understanding the format of the GMAT exam, I can help the student identify the strategy that works best for them to answer the questions. I review the basics of math for the problem set and data sufficiency sections as well as the key points for reading comprehension and critical reasoning. I review grammar and rhetoric for the sentence completion section of the exam.

I learned Italian while I was going to school in Italy. It was a total immersion course. Even though, there were those who spoke English, I tried to speak only Italian by going to the movies, watching television, sitting in the park and listening to the Italians speaking. I practiced doing crossword puzzles in Italian, reading children's books in Italian and later on more advanced literature as well as medical books in Italian. I did grammar exercises and took Italian lessons. I still read Italian newspapers, listen to Italian programs and still speak Italian.

Since the MCAT is made up of various sections ranging from the Physical and Biological Sciences to Verbal and Writing, it is very important to understand how the test is set up. I have a very strong background in the Biological Sciences and am very comfortable with the Verbal and Writing parts of standardized tests. I am familiar with the organization of the MCATs as well as the basic principles in Science, Verbal and Writing skills. I know how the test is set up and am comfortable with instructing the tactics and techniques in test taking, as I have taken the MCATs and have graduated from Medical School.

I received a Masters in Bio-Nutrition from the University Of Bridgeport where I studied Biochemistry, Nutrition and Disease, Vitamins and their Importance, Physiology, Maternal and Fetal Development and the importance of good Nutrition. I have work experience in nutritional counseling and have lectured on guidelines of moderation, food portions to many civic groups and health agencies.

I have strong background in math and I can take the more complex ideas in prealgebra and break them down into smaller concepts. I use worksheets, drawings and examples from real life to explain concepts like slope, rate of change, polynomials and linear equations. I feel that with my background I can explain the material in many different ways to help promote understanding.

SAT Math

My approach to the SAT Math is to review the basics of Math. These basics create the foundations for the more advanced problems in Algebra, Geometry, Data Analysis and the other topics tested in the SAT Math section. I work with the student to show them the tactics and techniques for answering the different types of questions.

SAT Reading

I have over 9 years experience tutoring the reading section of the SAT. I am an avid reader and can illustrate the different techniques to be able to map out passages, how to answer vocabulary in context and to identify supporting details. Grammar and rhetoric are important aspects of the reading section and I make sure that these concepts are reviewed and solid.

Study Skills

In the course of my academic studies, I have learned how to take a subject and break it down into its smaller components. I have found that it is easier to learn a more complex topic when the fundamentals are more secure. I am a firm believer in the use of a calendar to prioritize events which then helps in time management. I also work on goal setting and categorizing them according to short term, medium term and long term goals and then what has to be done to achieve these goals. Therefore, I use a calendar for mapping out academic work in order of due date, the work involved and goal settings to help the individual focus on what they want to do and how they can go about achieving their goals.
