My name is Heather. I am in my tenth year as an elementary ESOL teacher. Before that, I taught English as New Language to adults for one year. I graduated with a bachelor's degree in ELA and a minor in TESOL education. I completed my Master's Degree in Literacy. I am certified in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages B-12), Elementary Education 1-6, and ELA 7-12. In college, not everything came easily. I had to stay after and ask for extra help from my professors. They were always willing to break down the material for me into more manageable pieces which helped me succeed. This approach inspires my tutoring. I know how defeated I felt when I didn't understand a concept, and how awesome I felt when I worked with someone to conquer it. I use lessons that build new information on top of prior knowledge to give you a running start and help you feel comfortable. I also give ample opportunities to practice the skill or concept with an appropriate strategy. I want to help students conquer whatever they set their minds to, in a fun, meaningful way.

I have five years of tutoring experience in elementary core subjects (science, social studies, ELA and math) and English as a Second Language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking). I worked with students one-on-one, and in small groups during and after school. I created lessons and activities to increase reading levels, writing ability, and preparing students for state testing. I also helped students with homework and retaught skills when necessary.

I want to give students the tools they need to succeed. I welcome family involvement to boost student outcomes. Feel free to contact me with any questions or to schedule a lesson!

English

In my undergraduate education, I studied a wide spectrum of literature and linguistics. I learned and wrote about Western Literature, American Literature, Greek Mythology, and Shakespeare. I analyzed and argued for and against different authors. I bring this expertise as I teach fiction and non-fiction in the classroom.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

I am in my seventh year of teaching English as a new language. I have worked with many different ages and language levels ranging from newcomers to advanced speakers. I have earned an effective or highly effective designation each year.
Reading

Reading

I studied Literacy for my Master's degree. I completed a semester practicum that identified and addressed reading challenges. I use those skills in all of my instruction.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

I use various methods to help students learn and retain new vocabulary. Gamification is one of the most effective strategies in learning new vocabulary. This is has proved effective in both the Literacy and ENL classrooms.
Writing

Writing

I taught small group writing instruction after school for ENL students who wanted to test out of my class. I used a step by step approach which focused on the purpose and development of each section of a composition. Additionally, I taught expository and persuasive writing in class.

Amazing, Confidence Inspiring Tutor

Heather has been an amazing tutor for our daughter. Upon entering 3rd grade, and her first year in a public school setting, she was a little behind in ELA and reading fluency. After two lessons per week for about a month, she helped our daughter substantially! Our daughter's grades have risen significantly, she's showing more confidence in her work and school setting, and she knows she can reach out for help with Heather any time she needs to. I am so glad we found Heather and for the amazing work she has done so quickly with our daughter. It has really turned this school year around.
