My name is Zachary. My interest in tutoring started when I was a middle school student myself, helping a few classmates study for tests or cram for the state-required evaluations. When I was in high school, I started tutoring students in Algebra, Geometry, and Calculus I for cash, and quickly found I could make good money tutoring a wide range of subjects. I obtained my undergraduate degree from Baker University in Psychology, while continuing to tutor in increasing subject areas like English, biology, chemistry and philosophy. My graduate degree is a Master's of Science in Experimental Psychology, which was a statistics-heavy degree path.

When I tutor, I like to first discover how students are most comfortable learning. Psychology has long held that multiple learning styles exist, and while debate continues to rage over which style is best I prefer to think of each style as having its own strengths and drawbacks. However, I have learned to teach to many different styles, and can teach contextually, rote, test-oriented or experience-based lessons. I am also comfortable with group tutoring, having led several classes of students in graduate school.

I also understand that, all the usual notes about teaching for the long-term aside, sometimes you just need someone to teach you how to take a college prep test. Some people just don't like taking ACTs and SATs, and there's nothing wrong with that. I can teach you how to stop fearing the bubble sheets, and how to pick out patterns and styles of questioning that help you find the right answer even when you're unsure of your own.

However, true learning often takes place when the student learns not merely facts and formulas, but the context in which those things occur. I am very skilled in teaching core subjects in a method that helps students to absorb and increase in knowledge without any tutor present at all. I consider my job well done if a student keeps reading the books long after the tutoring sessions expire.

Approved Subjects

ADHD

ADHD

Having spent the majority of the last six years studying psychology, and in particular psychopathology, teaching on ADD/ADHD is a specialty of mine. I can teach both the abnormal psychology of ADD/ADHD (it's diagnostic criterion, DSM-IV standards and so on), and the pharmacology behind treatment options, as well as prevailing theory as to both ADHD as a diagnosis and the studies behind its emergence.
AFOQT

AFOQT

I'm already an ASVAB tutor through WyzAnt, which means I've tutored and taught the Air Force Officer Qualifying Test as a matter of course (the AFOQT being similar enough in content that some tutoring agencies and students don't bother to differentiate prior to starting tutoring). I have formally tutored 2 cadets in the AFOQT, and both went on to qualify through their scores for OCS training.
ASVAB

ASVAB

In high school I was offered the chance to take an ASVAB along with most other students at my grade level. I scored in the 90th percentile or better in all subject areas for the AFQT, including a 99th percentile for Mathematics. I did not enlist due to medical issues and a desire to attend college immediately after graduation, but I believe my scores speak for themselves. In addition, I have taken and administered multiple Item Response Theory (IRT) based tests, which is the system used in the design of the ASVAB, so I believe I can effectively communicate my knowledge of the right way to study for these tests to other individuals.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I have worked with autistic, Aspergers and AS populations since before I was a tutor through WyzAnt. My step-brother is an 11-year-old with moderate autism, and with whom I have worked in nearly all areas of academic achievement since 4th grade. Further, my graduate degree from Emporia State University includes formalized training in dealing with different mentally ill populations, including individuals with autism.
Biology

Biology

As part of my studies for my Master's of Experimental Psychology, I completed courses in Biology, Sensation & Perception, Neurobiology, and Anatomy/Physiology. I have over 10 years' experience in tutoring high schoolers in a wide variety of subjects.
Dyslexia

Dyslexia

Having studied the Orton-Gillingham method at university and worked with individuals who have dyslexia and dysgraphia, my qualification for dyslexia-specific tutoring is experience-based. I have also received formalized training in general LD theory from Emporia State University, and have worked with three individuals from the dyslexic population in the last two years.
English

English

Over the course of 6 years of higher education, I have worked as an editor and proofreader for dozens of college students covering hundreds of papers, including a year spent as Scholarship Chair of my undergraduate fraternity. My experience has ranged from teaching speed reading and phonics techniques for classes of 30+ individuals to becoming ESL-certified to teach English in a foreign country. I am trained in APA, MLA and Chicago styles and have familiarity with Turabian and other hybrid codes of composition and reference. As a thesis graduate of Emporia State, I have personally survived the experience of editing, proofing and publishing a multi-hundred page scientific paper. I also have wide-ranging experience instructing younger students in phonics, grammar and spoken English skills, including young ESL students.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

As a former instructor for the Institute of Reading Development, a long-time English tutor, and as an accent coach, I have worked with ESL individuals ranging from kindergarten through seniors in helping with diction, grammar, syntax and pronunciation. I am very comfortable helping individuals of Arabic, Hispanic, Indian, Scandinavian and Japanese dialects, but am always willing to tackle a new challenge!
Geometry

Geometry

As a Geometry tutor, I take a visual, practice-based approach to teaching formulas and applications. The word problem-heavy nature of geometry is often a stumbling block for a student, and my approach works at the learner's own pace, explaining and practicing real-life applications of the principles of geometry. Whether you're looking for geometry instruction for a high school class, at the collegiate level, or even to improve standardized test scores, I have the perfect geometry tutoring for you.
Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra

Algebra and Algebra II tutoring was how I got my start tutoring back in college, and remain my strongest subjects to date. I needed to have a mastery of Linear algebra (and tougher maths besides) in order to receive my Master's degree, and many of the students I tutored in Geometry and Pre-Algebra through WyzAnt became Linear Algebra students over time (not to mention the ones who needed LA review in preparation for ACT or SAT tutoring).
Religion

Religion

I have taken multiple courses in undergraduate college relating to world religious studies and the tenets and ethical philosophies of world religions. Further, I specifically took courses relating to the philosophies and ethics of the Christian faith, and analysis of the contents of the Bible. I have worked to lead Vacation Bible Schools through my church, and feel that I am qualified to instruct as to the specific contents and tenets of different sects of Christianity as well as the general ethical principles of world religions.
SAT Reading

SAT Reading

After 4 years of SAT tutoring, I take a heuristic approach to study that revolves around student practice and category preparation. Students I tutor often remark how easily they fall into the rhythm of the SAT test after my tutoring, and how quickly they can triage problems and solve the ones that will definitely earn them points.
Statistics

Statistics

For 10 years, I have worked for financial institutions utilizing statistical methods to create and adjust fraud strategies. These methods include practical, everyday statistics as well as specialized procedures common to banks and FIs in the USA. This work also involves collaborating with and cross-checking the work of other stat analysts for accuracy and applicability.
Study Skills

Study Skills

Over 9 years now I've tutored a total of about 50 individuals, in groups and one-on-one, in various subjects ranging from simple mathematics to computer programming and psychology, and all of whom required different study techniques to be employed, including flash cards, rote memorization, experiential learning, visual cueing, and mnemonics. Furthermore, I am currently working with a young man whose tutoring requires that I stick to certain Kansas State-approved study methodologies, so I have official experience using those methods as well. I have detailed experience working tutoring using Kansas State requirements for various grade levels of skills and the methods used to teach them to both individual students and large groups, including milestone markers and official state criterion as of 2009-2010 school year revisions. I have incorporated these with my own techniques for teaching study skills outside the classroom as well as effective methods for learning in-class.

Zachary's tutoring is really helpful.

I have virtually no training in statistical analysis aside from a single college statistics course, so I greatly appreciate Zachary's tutoring and expertise. In the several tutoring sessions I have had with Zachary, I have been impressed by his ability to translate complicated ideas and information into understandable concepts. He is also very patient with the many questions I have as we work through the data from my Master's Thesis Study. I would highly recommend Zachary for tutoring. Thanks Zachary!

Success

We are really pleased with how Zachary is able to help both of our sons. We received an email from my older son's algebra 2 teacher on Monday indicating that he needed to get a 75% or higher on his next 3 tests in order to raise his grade to a 70%. Our son had his second session with Zachary on Sunday. We just found out that he received an 85% on the test today, so he's well on his way! Zachary is an excellent tutor

Excellent Tutor who is able to reach my son

My son has struggled with Algebra II and other core classes. I was able to see improvement after the first few sessions in most of his classes and it has continued on a successful track. Zack has been able to reach him at a level where the attitude of “I’m too stupid to learn this” to the point where he is wanting to learn. We still have issues with him wanting to do anything but study, but he is getting more out of the time spent studying, but that goes along with being 16. We recently turned the corner when taking the Algebra II quarter final where my son earned a B+ and was above both the average and median score. He was able to take a solid D- to a solid C for the quarter. We have been meeting over spring break and for the first time my son is prepared for the next chapter in Algebra instead of trying to catch up. Zack has laid the groundwork for a higher grade for the next quarter in all of my son’s classes and there is no doubt he will achieve this goal.

Hooray for Zachary!

Zachary has completed two sessions with my 13 year old son. My son has struggled with math since early elementary, and we are so grateful to have found Zachary! My son's first comments were "he explains math in a way that I understand it!" and "my tutor is awesome!" Tonight he said "when we finish studying, I feel like I am good at school," high praise from a boy who is very smart, but struggles in the classroom. The one on one attention and praise that Zachary gives during the session are terrific! Hooray for Zachary!

Very adaptive

Zachary had a way of re-phrasing Statistics concepts that made them easier to grasp. He's an exceptional teacher and I would highly recommend him.

brought my 10th grader up to speed

My 10th grader is now in Algebra 2. She did not have the greatest teacher for Algebra 1 and so Zach took time to review and re-teach a large portion of what she initially missed. He was able to go over enough work in 2 hours what would have taken 2 months in a classroom. She felt more ready for her test and is looking forward to her future sessions with Zach. She feels he is giving her the tools to succeed.
