I truly enjoy seeing those I teach "get it" and have that "ah ha" moment. A structural engineer by trade, I want to continually learn new things each and every day. It's my job! Structures and math are my specialties of course, but I don't fit the mold as a typical engineer as I enjoy interacting with people too.

Tutoring experience? Well...besides the hours on Wyzant's platform tutoring mostly engineering, algebra, trigonometry, and structures for architecture students, I have previously volunteered to teach at engineering outreach events at a science museum, state fair, and at a few public schools' engineering days. Most of the teachers thought I was a teacher and not an engineer. They were a bit shocked when I said I was a practicing engineer. I adjusted my employment beginning in 2015 and have taught engineering courses for high school and middle school students. Currently, I work as an online instructor for Kaplan/PPI2Pass and teach professional development seminars for practicing engineers/architects. I used to teach a class for pre-teens at my church too. And I tutored my friends through their high school math way back when.

Times are flexible but I do have a 24 hour cancellation policy. Hey, I want to be able to plan my day too! It is my desire to help students in a positive, friendly, and fun atmosphere. I look forward to future contact. Have a wonderful day!

Architecture

Architecture

I have a BS degree from the Milwaukee School of Engineering for Architectural Engineering with a Structural Specialty. My senior design project included completing all of the architecture for a Harley Davidson museum and hotel. I am a licensed Professional Engineer in New York state and a licensed Structural Engineer in Illinois. I worked as a Structural Engineer for 15 years before transitioning to teach professional development seminars to both architects and engineers. I would like to help architects and architecture students in understanding their structures, concrete, etc courses.
AutoCAD

AutoCAD

I have used AutoCAD from the time I graduated from college 14 years ago. I have drafted structural plans, details, and sections. I use mostly keyboard shortcuts, especially ones that are left handed. This way, I can keep my right hand on the mouse and use the keyboard with my left. I am proficient at 2D cad work including polylines, shapes, dimensions, offsets, layers, lineweights, styles, etc.
Civil Engineering

Civil Engineering

I took classes toward a civil engineering degree at SUNY Buffalo for two years. I have a BS degree from the Milwaukee School of Engineering for Architectural Engineering with a Structural Specialty. I am a licensed Professional Engineer in New York state and a licensed Structural Engineer in Illinois. I worked as a Structural Engineer for 15 years before transitioning to teach professional development seminars to architects and engineers. Structural engineering is an offshoot of civil engineering.

Patient and very knowledgeable!

Robin is a phenomenal tutor. I thought I would never find a tutor for structural engineering. She is very clear about the material and uses the Wyzant lesson platform to clearly explain things and draw them out. She takes time to make sure I understand each part of the process to completing my homework. I would recommend her 100 percent!

Knowledgeable and Patient Instructor

Robin is very thorough in the explanations and provides visual aids as well as verbal explanations. I was having a tough time grasping a concept and she walked me through it. I felt comfortable saying I didn't understand and she was really great in providing different ways to look at it until I understood. I very much appreciate her level of knowledge and patience.

Excellent teacher

Robin took time to learn the differences between AutoCad and Qcad to teach me how to draw using this program. Very patient and through teacher. I let her know what I was looking to learn and she tailored her instruction to my needs. I'd recommend her to all.

patient and knowledgeable tutor

Robin jump-started my son and made him confident to finish his assignment Independently. He now has excellent notes to rely on. My son often thinks he understands things better than he really does. Robin set him on the right track.

Helpful

My daughter needed just a little help with doing her homework since she had absences from school due to illness. Robin was able to catch her up in less that an hour. My daughter was disappointed that Robin had to look up things during the lesson. But I think it is the mark of a good teacher to look things up when you are unsure. Also, we really didn't give her any preparation on what my daughter's needs were prior to the appointment.

Knowledgeable and very nice.

My daughter had a great 1st lesson with Robin. She was very knowledgeable and easy going. My daughter feels she's prepared for her precalc test. We would definitely use her again.

Very innovative teacher!

I called Robin when one of my sons was almost failing his first year of high school math. My other son was doing OK but wanted to do better. Robin worked with both of them. They both have very different learning styles and abilities. She quickly adapted her teaching style to each of them to help them understand the math. Robin truly seems to enjoy math and has fun doing extra puzzles and fun thinking problems with the boys after their current homework is done. After two lessons my older son's test scores raised to a 75. After 3 lessons an 85 and his most recent test result was a 93! Amazing progress and he seems much less frustrated. My younger son could do a lot of the math problems in his head but he got points taken off for not showing his work. Robin made him slow down and explain the importance of showing his work. His grades have risen from the mid eighties to the mid nineties! I am so thankful that I found Robin when I did and am confident they can continue to excel with her help!
