As your child's potential tutor, I would like you to know that I have had many experiences working with elementary-aged students and special needs students in grades K-12. I have worked in both private and public schools in a one-on-one, small group, and regular classroom setting. I have certifications in Elementary Education, Special Education, and Art Studio Education K-12. I also have acquired significant training in the Orton-Gillingham phonetic analysis technique. This is a highly effective and recommended phonetic approach which will enable me to assist your child in learning how to read, write and spell more proficiently. My desire is to work in a tutoring capacity assisting students on a one-to-one basis, or a small group setting.

Initially, using both the school's and my own resources, I will diagnose your child's specific learning concerns. This may include communicating with you and your child's teacher so I can best assist your child to be successful in his/her academic endeavors. Sensitivity to your youngster's specific circumstances are of utmost importance to me as we work on obtaining approaches to provide him/her with the greatest academic success he/she can achieve.

I have worked extensively with ESL content and am well versed in reading comprehension skills. Over the years, I have developed strategies to assist and support students in reading comprehension methods. All of these experiences support dyslexic student in their encoding and decoding of words.

I am a certified N-6 elementary education teacher with a Master's degree in elementary education received from SUNY New Paltz, New Paltz, NY in 1986. I have extensive experience in public and private schools in the Hudson Valley. In these experiences I have worked with students in the general education population as well as with students with special needs. I have been employed @ the Dover Plains School District, Pine Plains School District, and the Northern Dutchess Christian School as an art educator. I have actively painted over the course of my lifetime, and have an interest in working with art (painting) students.

I have been trained and have used the sequential phonetic analysis known as the Orton Gillingham method to help students read, write and spell. This approach allows the student to successfully learn and master phonics in a step by step approach. The student will uncover the sounds of consonants and vowels and then practice them until competency. The approach is multi-sensory and it will allow the student to use picture/word/sound tools to help them to learn the mystery of specific sounds thus helping them to learn to read, write, and spell. For example, r-controlled vowels can be remembered using specific words. Whenever a learner sees a r-controlled vowel in a word all they have to do is use the sound associated with that word. All "or" words such as forward or organ will use the same sound found in the word "or". I have observed great success from students of all ages using this method.

I have taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for several years. My chosen commitment in faith is Christianity. I am also a certified teacher in Elementary Education and Special Education. I have attended the local church for many years. I am an elder on the consistory board (governing body of the church) and have held many positions of authority within the local church body including co-chairperson superintendent of Sunday School, youth leader, prayer circle and mission and outreach representative.

As your child's tutor in study skills I will assist your child in developing a diagnostic and prescriptive approach that will meet his/her specific needs. It will be based on a systematic approach to help him/her to secure the skills necessary for success in his/her future academic endeavors.

Over my career, I have developed writing strategies that are helpful to students. When these methods are applied students will create thoughtful, well- organized, grammatically correct paragraphs.
