Tutor-Reading and Elementary Math Specialist

My name is Peter G. and I am a retired Special Education teacher. I have over 6 years experience tutoring students in grades 1-6. I am NY State and NJ state certified. I am familiar with the common core curriculum that is used in many school districts. I am patient with my students and try to make learning interesting for my students. I always communicate with the students families about the students levels, progress and provide a student education plan that I will use.

My experiences with my tutoring students is amazing. Its great to see what interests the students and I tailor my activities towards the student interests. One student was working hard to get into a technology program because he wanted to join the armed forces when he grew up. We worked on designing robots that could fly and save people. Another student was having difficulty with multi-step math problems. We worked on breaking each problem into small steps using the vocabulary words as clues on how to solve the problems. Many of my students have succeeded in becoming honor students or making it into an advanced program.

I am an excellent common core teacher because of my understanding of what is expected in terms of lessons and curriculum. Being trained in New York and working with students from states that use common core, I have gained the knowledge of how it is taught. Students are expected to complete more complex work and be able to explain why they choose a specific way to work on a problem. For example, using mental math and using number lines and number boxes is required for math problems. The Common Core ELA curriculum requires students to understand characters and determine main idea, theme and problem/solution in the story. The writing curriculum asks students to write complete essays. I use the writers workshop model to give students a way to achieve this. The Common Core Curriculum requires different methods than what were taught in the past.
