Bio

I am a New York and Pennsylvania certified teacher with more than twenty years of experience working with students in a variety of educational settings. My certifications are in Spanish, Social Studies, and English as a New Language (ENL), and I currently teach Spanish and ENL at the high school level.

My certifications are in Spanish, Social Studies, and English as a New Language (ENL), and I currently teach Spanish and ENL at the high school level.

Throughout my career, I have worked with students ranging from middle school through adulthood, helping them develop not only content knowledge but also the skills needed for long-term academic success. In addition to language instruction, I have extensive experience supporting students with study skills, executive functioning, organization, time management, reading comprehension, academic writing, and test preparation. I have helped students prepare for Regents examinations, SAT exams, teacher certification tests, citizenship exams, and language proficiency assessments.

I hold a master's degree in Spanish and have participated in study abroad programs in Peru, Spain, and Mexico. I have also worked as an adjunct college instructor, community ENL instructor, private tutor, and Spanish-English interpreter. My experience working with multilingual learners has given me a deep understanding of how students acquire language, develop literacy skills, and build confidence as learners.

As a tutor, I strive to create a supportive and encouraging environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, taking risks, and developing independence. Whether a student needs help with Spanish, English language development, writing, study skills, test preparation, or overall academic organization, my goal is to help them gain the confidence and strategies they need to succeed both in school and beyond.

I have extensive experience supporting students in literacy, reading comprehension, literary analysis, creative writing, and research writing. While I am not certified in ELA, I teach reading and writing skills daily in my Spanish and English as a New Language classes and have helped many students strengthen their academic writing across a variety of subject areas. I work with students on everything from paragraph structure and thesis development to research papers and literary analysis.

I have worked with English language learners for many years as a volunteer tutor, private instructor, community educator, and public school teacher. I recently completed a Certificate of Advanced Studies in TESOL at Siena College and am certified to teach English as a New Language in New York State. My experience includes helping students improve conversational English, academic vocabulary, reading comprehension, writing, study skills, and confidence in using English both inside and outside the classroom. Between teaching and studying the Spanish language and teaching ESL as a volunteer, I have studied linguistics, phonetics, and other aspects of the structure of language. My master's thesis was focused on second language acquisition and how to help students to learn the structure of language.

I have over 20 years' experience as a teacher and have provided feedback on countless written assignments for middle school, high school, and college students. I have also helped adult learners to proofread websites and other professional publications. I wrote my master's thesis on the role of written corrective feedback in the world language classroom. I can help you to develop polished and professional essays, resumes, and other publications. Not only can I point out errors, but I can teach tips and tricks to avoid such errors in the future. I can proofread effectively in both English and in Spanish.

While I took the SAT many years ago, I did extremely well on the reading section of the test when I took it. Since that time, I have devoted much of my life to language, as a Spanish teacher, linguistics student, and English as a Second Language tutor. I am a strong reader and have frequently helped students to develop effective decoding techniques and memory strategies for vocabulary.

I hold a master's degree in Spanish and have participated in study abroad programs in Spain, Peru, and Mexico. In addition to classroom teaching, I have served as a Spanish-English interpreter and translator and have spent much of my career helping students develop confidence in their communication skills. My instruction emphasizes meaningful communication, cultural understanding, and practical language use while also providing students with the grammatical foundation they need for long-term success. I have earned a Superior rating on the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI), the highest level available on that assessment, demonstrating advanced professional proficiency in spoken Spanish.

For more than twenty years, I have helped students develop the study skills and organizational habits needed for academic success. I work with students on time management, planning, organization, note-taking, test preparation, executive functioning, and managing long-term assignments. My goal is not only to help students complete today's work, but also to develop strategies they can use independently in the future.

Writing

Writing is one of my strongest areas of expertise. I have helped students at the middle school, high school, college, and adult levels develop essays, research papers, scholarship applications, and other academic writing projects. I guide students through the entire writing process, including brainstorming, organization, thesis development, drafting, revision, and editing.

Great tutor!!

April has been wonderful to work with. At our first meeting she asked me where I wanted her to help and what I needed to learn. She then put together the tutoring tailored to me and my schedule. I have found her to very patient and willing to work with someone that is challenged in learning a new language. With her as my tutor I will be able to speak Spanish within the time frame needed.

Excellent English Tutor

April has taught my daughter English for 2 months, mainly on English writing. She is polite and responsible. She reads through my daughter's essays carefully, provides detailed comments and then asks to re-write same essays. I think her teaching method is effective and can improve writing skills in large scale.

April went above and beyond!

With my time running out in order to pass the new PA required PAPA testing (writing module) to become licensed to teach elementary school in the state, April was able to successfully prepare me in every aspect of the test by doing her own research on the test itself, preparing mock exams and pointing me towards websites that could help me review and take practice tests prior to our next session. She did this all on her own time. The hour that we would spend together during tutoring sessions was focused on her understanding where I struggled during my practice tests and reviewing those target areas. I am happy to say that April was able to help me increase my score significantly in a short period of time thus enabling me to successfully pass the PAPA test. I found her to be someone that makes things easy to understand and someone who has a lot of passion for what she is doing. She was almost as happy as I was to hear that I passed!! I would highly recommend April!
