Bio

I am a NY and PA certified Spanish and ENL teacher. In my full-time employment, I have primarily taught Spanish I-V to grades 7-12. As part of my master's degree program in Spanish, I participated in study abroad experiences in Peru, Spain and Mexico. I have also worked with adult students as a private tutor, and as an adjunct Spanish instructor, community ENL instructor, and Spanish-English interpreter.

I have also worked with adult students as a private tutor, and as an adjunct Spanish instructor, community ENL instructor, and Spanish-English interpreter.

In my Spanish classrooms, I use comprehensible input, and help students to acquire language through stories and exposure to authentic resources. I teach grammar in context and prioritize authentic communication. I am not a native Spanish speaker; however, I have reached a high degree of proficiency through continued study. I test at Superior on the ACTFL oral proficiency interview, and I have taught advanced courses for many years.

I have volunteered with community English as a New Language programs throughout my adult life and recently completed a certification program to teach ENL in New York state public schools. I have reached a high degree of proficiency in my own second language and I know how to help English language learners reach their goals.

Throughout my career, I have worked as an advisor for small groups of students, working closely with students' learning teams to create integrated plans for their future success. I have extensive experience tutoring students in study skills and test preparation. Education is my joy and delight, and I look forward to sharing that excitement with you or your child!

I have worked extensively on literacy skills and creative writing with various private tutoring students. I am not certified in ELA, but my skills in teaching literacy, literature analysis, creative writing and research papers in my certified content areas of Spanish, Social Studies, and English as a New Language have helped me to support students successfully in this area.

I have volunteered as an English tutor throughout most of my adult life. I recently completed a Certificate of Advanced Studies at Siena College and am now New York state certified in TESOL and am teaching one section of standalone ENL at a public high school.

I have helped numerous students with essay writing over the years, both English language learners and native English speakers. I have taught essay writing in Spanish and in English and have walked students through the process of creating research papers and thesis essays countless times.

Between teaching and studying the Spanish language and teaching ESL as a volunteer, I have studied linguistics, phonetics, and other aspects of the structure of language. My master's thesis was focused on second language acquisition and how to help students to learn the structure of language.

I started proofreading and editing other students' work in high school, where I served as a peer tutor and the editor for the school literary magazine. I continued tutoring in college and started proofreading and editing my church newsletter. I taught history and Spanish upon graduation. After ten years of grading essays and other student work, I learned to identify errors in writing samples very quickly. I always tried to coach my students as writers by not only pointing out mistakes but modeling and explaining how to make their writing more interesting, clear, and grammatically accurate. I have continued to tutor students in writing and to help friends with proofreading since leaving my teaching job to stay home with my young children.

While I took the SAT many years ago, I did extremely well on the reading section of the test when I took it. Since that time, I have devoted much of my life to language, as a Spanish teacher, linguistics student, and English as a Second Language tutor. I am a strong reader and have frequently helped students to develop effective decoding techniques and memory strategies for vocabulary.

I am fluent in Spanish. I have taught Spanish for fifteen years, have my MA in Spanish, and have studied in Spain, Peru and Mexico. I have served as a volunteer English-Spanish interpreter and translator and have devoted much of my life to mastering this beautiful, enchanting language. I have taught all levels of Spanish to all ages. See my biography for more details. I am not a native speaker, but I test at Superior on the ACTFL (American Council of Teachers of Foreign Languages) OPI (Oral Proficiency Interview), which is the highest level available on that test.

I started helping other students with study skills when I was still a student myself. As an advisor to seventh grade students for seven years, I developed countless lessons on study skills and test preparation. As the co-chair of our school's advisory committee, I also helped other teachers to create similar lessons for grades 6-9. I have worked with many study skills students via Wyzant and many have left testimonials on this site.

As I mentioned in the proofreading description, I have always sought to coach my students as writers. Expressing oneself well in writing is critical to almost any academic pursuit. In addition to helping students to write essays and research papers, I enjoy creative writing and story telling in English and in Spanish.

Great tutor!!

April has been wonderful to work with. At our first meeting she asked me where I wanted her to help and what I needed to learn. She then put together the tutoring tailored to me and my schedule. I have found her to very patient and willing to work with someone that is challenged in learning a new language. With her as my tutor I will be able to speak Spanish within the time frame needed.

Excellent English Tutor

April has taught my daughter English for 2 months, mainly on English writing. She is polite and responsible. She reads through my daughter's essays carefully, provides detailed comments and then asks to re-write same essays. I think her teaching method is effective and can improve writing skills in large scale.

April went above and beyond!

With my time running out in order to pass the new PA required PAPA testing (writing module) to become licensed to teach elementary school in the state, April was able to successfully prepare me in every aspect of the test by doing her own research on the test itself, preparing mock exams and pointing me towards websites that could help me review and take practice tests prior to our next session. She did this all on her own time. The hour that we would spend together during tutoring sessions was focused on her understanding where I struggled during my practice tests and reviewing those target areas. I am happy to say that April was able to help me increase my score significantly in a short period of time thus enabling me to successfully pass the PAPA test. I found her to be someone that makes things easy to understand and someone who has a lot of passion for what she is doing. She was almost as happy as I was to hear that I passed!! I would highly recommend April!
