I have taught for many years. I have worked with children of all ages in my church for many years. I have raised and homeschooled 8 children. The youngest is now 14. I worked as a teacher's aid in a pre-k classroom for a year. I have been a reading tutor for about ten years. I have had about 20 private students during that time. These students have dyslexia and range in age from 6 to 18. I use the Barton Reading and Spelling System as the backbone of my teaching program. If the student needs it, I support their auditory processing abilities with a foundational program called Foundation in Sounds. I have found many ways to supplement the classes as I see the students need for practice and review. I do the reading tutoring online and in-person. I am also an ESL teacher with VIPKid. This is a tutoring company for students in China. The students I get in this job are between 7 and 14. I can't do this during the day, though, because those students are sleeping.
My personality is patient and gentle.
My speaking speed is slow.

Dyslexia

I have been teaching reading to dyslexic children and adults for about ten years as a private business. I adapt to the needs of my students, so each student is an opportunity for me to learn more about what works. I use a proven teaching system (Barton) and use supplemental resources to deliver effective, interesting lessons.
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been homeschooling my children since 1995. I have eight children. I have taught all elementary subjects to my children. My youngest is in second grade now. My oldest just graduated from Patrick Henry College with a degree in American Politics and Policy. They all score well on standardized tests and are good readers.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

After training and experience with the online ESL company, I have found teaching English very rewarding. I love grammar, reading, spelling, word meanings, etc. Maybe I'm a "word nerd," but I really love language! I have found a fantastic curriculum to use with any online student (Off2Class) and I am very anxious to use it with Wyzant students.
Phonics

Phonics

I have homeschooled my eight children since 1995. I use a strong phonics-based reading program to teach reading. The teacher's book has daily scripted lessons that I use and expand upon and explain to ensure progress and understanding.
Reading

Reading

I have learned a lot about teaching reading through my private business teaching reading to dyslexic children and adults. I also taught my own eight children to read, who all learned normally. I can support reading progress in a wide range of learners.

Kay is an EXCELLENT tutor!

We are so appreciative of all Kay's hard work with our severely older teen who is dyslexic, along with other learning challenges. Kay was kind and extremely patient with our teen, who also lacks confidence. Our teen really trusted her, and liked working with Kay. Kay even found the perfect curriculum to use with our teen Occasionally, I'd be passing by the desktop during a tutoring session, and would marvel at Kay's ability to work so well with our teen. I know from experience that teaching our teen was continually very challenging. Kay remained cool, calm, and patient at all times. Our teen made great strides educationally, and we believe, due to Kay's diligence, that our teen got as far as the teen was capable at this point. Due to unforeseen circumstances, we had to stop tutoring abruptly, but if our situation changes, believe me, we'll be begging Kay to tutor our older teen again!
