Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

First, I have 4 years' experience in grades K - 8. Next, I have knowledge of the Common Core Standards for both English and Math. Finally, I have a life long love of learning that I will strive to instill in all of my students. Finally, I have an individualized approach to tutoring. Every child is tutored based on their individual needs. I have a BA in English/Creative Writing from Columbia University.

Elementary Math

I have 4 years experience tutoring Elementary Math. This includes Kindergarten through Grade 3. In addition, I am familiar and have tutored with the new Common Core Math standards.

English

I have tutored K through 5 for five years with optimal results. My emphasis is primarily ELA. Most of my students achieved a 4+ on ELA test for the past school year. In addition, I have a BA from Columbia University in English.

ESL/ESOL

I have over 3 years experience teaching ESL to adults.

Literature

I am proficient in assisting both children and adults to analyze and respond to literature. For children, I use the Common Core standards. I strive to instill a love of literature while helping both children and adults to understand the various genres. In addition, I have a degree in English/Creative Writing from Columbia University.

Phonics

I feel that I am qualified to tutor in phonics because I have 4 years of experience in tutoring Kindergarten through Grade 5. Furthermore, a good percentage of that tutoring was for Kindergarten, Grade 1 and Grade 2. I have assisted many children specifically with phonics and reading. Additionally, I have a B.A. in English.

Proofreading

First, I have 2 years experience as a Proofreader/Editor for a New York advertising agency. Next, I have 4 years experience in proofreading papers, texts and essays. Finally, I have assisted children in achieving academic excellence through proofreading their material and aiding them in improving their written English.

Reading

I have an exemplary record in improving children's reading levels. Most recently, I had one child who improved three reading levels in 2nd grade. In addition, I have four years of experience in assisting children to reach their full reading potential.

Vocabulary

I have extensive experience assisting children to increase their vocabulary. I teach them multiple strategies and have had consistent success throughout my tutoring career. One such student credits me for helping her to get accepted into Staten Island Technical High School.

Writing

As an accomplished poet and writer, I have unique experience to share with my students. I have over four years of experience teaching the art of writing to both grades K through 8th grade and adults. This includes basic writing, as well as college essay skills. Furthermore, my emphasis at Columbia University was Creative Writing. Finally, I will impart a love of the written word to my students.
