With over 28 years of experience helping young children become confident readers, I provide highly individualized reading instruction that goes far beyond worksheets or generic tutoring. I hold a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from St. John's University, a Master's degree in Education from Touro College, earned my Reading Recovery certification through New York University in 2000, and am trained in the Orton-Gillingham approach.
My career began as a nursery school teacher at Celebration for Kids (1995–1998), followed by teaching at P.S. 203 (1998–2000). From 2000–2006, I served as a Reading Recovery teacher and Reading Staff Developer at P.S. 134, where I worked one-on-one with struggling readers and trained Kindergarten through second-grade teachers in effective literacy instruction. Since 2010, I have been a private tutor helping children become successful readers.
What makes my tutoring different is the level of analysis that goes into every lesson. During the first session, I carefully assess your child's reading and writing skills to determine exactly what they know and what is preventing them from moving forward. Every lesson is designed specifically for your child.
As your child reads, I pay close attention to every error, self-correction, hesitation, and strategy they use. I take detailed running records and analyze their reading behaviors after every lesson to determine exactly what they need next. This allows me to continually adjust instruction so every lesson builds on the previous one and targets the skills that will have the greatest impact.
My instruction combines Reading Recovery, Orton-Gillingham, systematic phonics, and authentic reading and writing experiences because reading and writing develop together. Every lesson has a clear purpose, and every teaching decision is based on your child's individual progress. My goal is to build confident, independent readers.
