I am a practicing attorney in New York State. I currently do family and matrimonial law but I have also worked as a law clerk and have extensive experience with legal writing.
I love education and feel passionate about continuing to work with students at all levels. I have experience tutoring at the high school, college, and law school level. I have worked with pre-law students to help prepare for the transition into law school and I have worked on test preparation including the LSAT, MPRE and the UBE.
My tutoring philosophy is to encourage students to pinpoint the question that they have; often times the exercise of identifying the problem can provide the most benefit. I am flexible and work hard to tailor my teaching style to the student's needs, learning preferences, and the task at hand.

Please reach out if you are interested in talking more and I look forward to working with you!

Approved Subjects

Biochemistry

Biochemistry

I took Biochemistry Fall 2012 and I received an A in the course. I have an understanding of the material because of my involvement in both Biology and Chemistry classes. For this class, I found that drawing out processes was the most efficient way for me to study. I have a large poster-board with the steps of Gluconeogenesis and Glycolysis on my wall! As a tutor I would recommend a visual learning approach and I would work with you to understand the reaction steps.
Biology

Biology

I have been involved with the Biology Department at Elmira College since my freshman year. I have taken a wide range of Biology classes, focusing on cellular, microbiological and genetic areas. I truly enjoy learning and teaching this material! I have tutored a variety of students in Biology, from test-prep to help writing laboratory reports. I have also helped teach a variety of different age groups from 7th Grade Science up to College level Genetics. I am able to explain the concepts at any level. As a tutor I think that it is important to tie Biology into our daily lives, how does this apply to me? (Especially for students that dislike or have trouble understanding the subject.) When you can understand that genes dictate whether or not you are lactose intolerant or that bacteria keep you healthy it helps you retain information.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I have taken a variety of upper-level math classes, including Calculus I and II and Physics I. Math does not come very easy to me, especially at a college level, which is why I signed up for elementary math, since I have struggled with math in college I am actually very good at teaching it to others. Math is a tricky subject because it comes easy to some people and takes more active thought for others. That is why having a tutor that doesn't just assume a younger student would know how to do a problem makes teaching easier. For math I find that taking a step-by-step approach works best, writing down and showing all my work when doing example problems helps others be able to do the problem on their own. Even though I have never tutored elementary math, I have tutored statistics and plan on using a similar approach.
Elementary Science

Elementary Science

I love Science and I love working with kids! Instilling a love for science at a young age is something I am passionate about. I have brothers in middle school that I love helping with their science homework. As a tutor I believe that using visual learning is key, showing the student images, video clips and writing out their answers are some of the best ways for them to learn. I also think that making associations, and helping them understand how science is such an important part of every-day life helps them recall information in the future.
Genetics

Genetics

I have taken College level Genetics and received an A in the course. Currently, I am the Teaching Assistant for Genetics and Society (for non-majors) which involves tutoring the students and helping them with test-prep and laboratory work. I am taking Molecular Genetics a Graduate level comprehensive class Fall 2013.
Microbiology

Microbiology

Microbiology is my passion. I am hoping to go to Grad School for Infectious Disease Control. I spend lots of time working in the Micro lab and have been the Lab Assistant for 2 Microbiology classes. I really enjoy learning through lab work so I used my laboratory manual to help me study, looking at the pictures of the bacteria and the media was a good way to jog my memory. I also think that reading articles about the bacteria helps give you background knowledge that might solidify the concept. For example if you learned about facultative anaerobic bacteria in class, reading an article about E. coli might help you connect the two later on.
Organic Chemistry

Organic Chemistry

I have taken two terms of Organic Chemistry with Labs and received an A in both sections. I have also conducted research synthesizing porphyrins with my Organic Chemistry Professor.
Regents

Regents

I have tutored for the Biology Regents before, and my background in Biology makes me well-suited. I have found that the best way to review is to do practice problems or practice regents exams to find areas to target. Once the student and I are aware of their needs, I have reviewed concepts with them from their textbook, old notes etc. to help them gain the skills needed in that area.
Sociology

Sociology

In addition to majoring in Biology, I have taken on a Women's Studies Minor (which falls under Sociology). I have taken a variety of classes in this subject, including Gender Theory, Norms and Deviance and the Psychology of Women. I am also an active member of Gender Issues and participate in Feminist Events. I volunteer with Rape Crisis of the Southern Tier, and through this I am involved in actively teaching the community about sexual assault and resources. I believe that my minor and real world experience provides me with a sufficient sociology background.
Study Skills

Study Skills

I have been a tutor for a variety of subjects throughout my college experience including Writing, Biology, Genetics, Microbiology and Chemistry. I feel comfortable creating practice materials and assessing a student's needs. I have also tutored a wide-range of students, and therefore I am able to tailor my level of difficulty and tutoring style to fit the student. Being a successful student takes practice and that is what "study skills" is about. It's finding a technique that works for the student, whether it is flashcards, reading aloud, problem solving or visual learning it is so important that students find out early on their best method to succeed in their academic career.
