Hello! I am an undergraduate student at Columbia University studying medieval art and architectural history. I am a junior and have been working with Professor Stephen Murray, one of the preeminent figures in Gothic architecture and medieval history. Before school, I was a professional cellist and music educator working with several El Sistema programs around NYC. I have been trained by cellists and musicians at Juilliard, Mannes, and Manhattan School of Music, principally with Prof. Andre Emelianoff, and I have played in orchestras under Maestro Gustavo Dudamel, and with members of Astor Piazzola's New Tango Sextet.
I also have extensive experience teaching. I've been involved with supporting Columbia's education efforts as well. I am a tutor for the Academic Resource Center, which provides peer to peer tutoring in a wide variety of subjects for Columbia undergraduates, providing help with Columbia's Core Curriculum classes such as Art Humanities and Music Humanities. Before Columbia, I worked for El Sistema, a global music education program targeting low income neighborhoods and providing an extremely high standard of musical education, and coached a number of students who went on to be accepted into national festivals playing under Maestro Dudamel and into college.
I am very good at being able to help people understand the connection between the written word and a work of art or music. Before I took up my tutoring position at Columbia, I was known about campus as the "music man" for being able to explain to people what was being asked of them in our music history courses and the like.
Again, a similar process to the above. I understand what preiconographic description is, and I use my previous experience tutoring to be able to simplify it and communicate what is being played and heard via the written word.
I have been educated in music since the age of six, and have attained a very high level of skill in the cello. I have always had a passion for historical music and performance, however, and
