I am a versatile author, educator, and language enthusiast dedicated to lifelong learning.

I have extensive knowledge and practice in all aspects of the English language, having graduated cum laude from Daemen University with a BA in English - Professional Writing concentration. I also graduated summa cum laude from Long Island University - Brooklyn with an MFA in Creative Writing.

My writing has been recognized with the John Masterson Writing Award, the Peter A. Siedlecki Award for Creative Writing, and the nationally-awarded Legacy Lab Rising Star Award, among others.

For the past five years, I've paired this with a passion for teaching — serving as a substitute teacher with the New York City Department of Education in Queens, and tutoring students ages 10 -18 across Manhattan and Queens. I prepare students for the AP, SAT, SSAT, ACT, SHSAT, and NY State exams, working one-on-one, in small groups, and in classroom settings, both in person and online. I focus on teaching techniques students can actually use on test day. My students have seen real results, including 100+ point increases on the SAT, along with stronger reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, and writing skills.

My goal is to foster a love for language in learners that not only helps them build critical skills, but also sparks their curiosity and instills confidence. My teaching philosophy is that every student is capable of excelling with dedication and practice, and I am committed to help my students achieve their goals.

I have also attended various creative writing workshops including Voodoonauts Summer Workshop and AMKA; worked as an editor at Defunct Magazine; been a short story judge for The League of Utah Writers; and been the writer-in-residence at Camp Stomping Ground. My experience as an English Tutor at AimPlus Education and C2 Education involved teaching English in online, 1:1, 3:1, and group class settings to students ranging from elementary school to high school, tracking their progress, and guiding them in various writing tasks. I made sure that they made sufficient progress towards their grammar, comprehension, and vocabulary in both reading and writing according to the relevant curriculum and their grade level. I have also conducted test preparation for PSAT, SSAT, SHSAT, SAT, ACT, and AP exams which included revising practice tests from past years in addition to guiding students in essay writing. Knowledgeable, Patient, and Organized

Berttila has been working with my son to prepare for his SHSAT English exam. She met him where he was and guided him through techniques on how to answer questions in both Revising/Editing and Reading Comprehension using carefully curated material that she provided. She has excellent communication and made sure to routinely update me on his progress through session reports and an adaptable tracker. She has proven to be an English subject matter expert, and has instilled confidence in my son as he approaches his exam. I could not recommend her more!
