Hi, I'm Sidney! I am a junior at Stony Brook University double majoring in Math and Creative Writing with a minor in Film, and I have a passion for teaching! When I was in high school, I realized that the most effective way to learn a subject was by teaching it to others and explaining the process out loud, and I incorporate this into my tutoring. My method is one of collaboration, and I personalize my lessons to each individual student. I start each session with a quick overview: I ask the student what they're struggling with, and have them verbalize the issue. Then, I take a look at the lesson plan and communicate to my student how our session is going to go. At the end of our session, I have the student teach me what they learned to ensure they're truly absorbing and understanding the material, not just memorizing it.
I have 2 years of high school and middle school math tutoring. I worked one-on-one with students through a program I created in high school for my chapter of the National Math Honor Society, and helped students with homework and test preparation. In addition to earning credit for all 11 AP Exams I took in high school, I also received a 1510 on my SAT. I am currently the Managing Editor for Stony Brook University's undergraduate literary magazine, Sandpiper Review, and as such have tons of experience working with writers and editing their work.
My goal as a tutor is to make sure my students are prepared for anything that comes their way, and aim to instill a confidence in my students that allows them to focus on process of learning and sets them up for success in all fields. I wholeheartedly welcome any resources, suggestions, and accommodations my students may have/need to ensure this is possible.
I am easily available to reach and respond quickly. Feel free to reach out to schedule a session, or if you have any questions. I look forward to working with you!
