Hi there.

First thing you need to know: I love learning and helping people.

I have more than 20 years of experience as a teacher, tutor, adult education program manager and tutor trainer. My specialty is adult basic education (adult literacy, basic and high school math, all GED subjects, college readiness) but I also love working with kids and teens.

I believe that learning is about the whole person. The important thing to me is seeing how what you learn helps you grow. Even if you are struggling with a difficult and dreaded subject, I try to show how you can be successful and feel good about your learning. My favorite moments are when I am helping someone who has been feeling stuck discover a new way to understand. The light bulb goes on. The frustration lifts. A smile comes back. That feeling is the reason I teach.

My approach is relaxed, but not slack. I like to have fun with learning, but I also recognize the importance of meeting goals and getting results. My students tell me I'm able to explain things well. I'm also good at helping people examine their study habits and suggesting ways to improve them.

I'm also flexible. I've mastered the basics in a lot of subjects from reading and writing to science and math. I have done plenty of test prep though I prefer to make it about more than just passing the test. I know how important it is to achieve success on tests and in grades, but for me real learning is so much more than just a passing score or a report card.

Just so you know, my hourly rate is negotiable to a degree. Travel time will make a difference, however.

Thanks for reading this. Good luck, and if you are ready to get the learning process started, I hope I'll hear from you.

GED

GED

The GED is a four-part test that adults (18 and above) can take to be awarded a high school equivalency diploma. I've been teaching classes to help adults prepare for the GED since 2005. I know what the test looks like, what it takes to pass, and how to maximize your scores on the different subject exams. Taken as a whole, it basically tests you on your reading and problem solving abilities. It does require knowledge of basic and high school math (including some algebra and simple geometry) and there are short essay sections on three of the tests. I've seen that students usually need the most help in these areas, so over the years I have developed a wide range of lessons and activities in math and writing. My experience teaching GED classes and my familiarity with all the subject areas it covers are my qualifications for tutoring students looking to take the test. But it's my approach that makes the difference. I start where you are at by using simple assessment tools. I then help you develop a personalized learning plan that will get you ready in the time frame we decide on. I use targeted lessons, practice tests, and straightforward materials. Lastly I cover specific techniques in preparation for the test itself and reducing the stress and anxiety it often produces. By the time you go to take the test, you will feel more confident and capable of doing your best. Taking the GED is not as easy as it might sound, but with the right guidance and support, it can be a great learning experience that will propel you to the next step in your educational journey. I've helped many people reach their goal of passing the tests and then go on to better jobs, training programs, and college. One more thing: I am now developing an accelerated study program to help students complete the 2014 version of the GED test which is now offered only as a computer based exam. My approach emphasizes using mobile and internet based technology. If you feel you're not sure you're ready to take the GED on a computer, I am re
Study Skills

Study Skills

Study skills are the work habits a student needs to succeed in school. They include organization, time management, project planning, note taking and test preparation. Effective reading and writing are very closely connected to study skills as well. I think study skills also include dealing with low motivation and discouragement. The ability to relate to others, especially teachers and fellow students, also affects one's ability to study effectively. In my 15 years of experience as a teacher and tutor, I've always made learning about study skills a part of my courses or lessons. My knowledge of study skills comes from classes and workshops I've taken in school and throughout my career as an educator. I've also developed my own strategies for becoming a more successful learner based on the ideas of multiple intelligences and individual learning styles. When I was a program manager for an adult education program, I even worked on a curriculum for our teachers and tutors to use with their students to develop good study habits. I've also learned quite a bit from teaching about how best to promote those habits and help learners recognize and change negative behaviors in their learning. Here is some of what I've learned: To teach someone study skills, it is necessary above all to create conditions for practice. Tutors need to be able to explain and then model effective behaviors and assist learners in the process of forming new habits by providing appropriate feedback. Just reading about what you need to do is not the same as putting positive behaviors into practice. It takes time for new habits to take root and become part of an established routine. The tutor's role is to facilitate the process as a coach would, mixing advice with support, and allowing the learner to gradually become an independent actor, capable of managing her behaviors on her own.

I really felt good about the choice I made to have Todd be my tutor, Todd was on time very patient he also wrote things down on our first session to better understand me so he can focus on what I really need to learn, "I like that no wasted time!" I'm really looking forward to our next scheduled session. Thanks Wyzant for helping me get started with a kind knowledgeable tutor.

GREAT Tutor!

Todd is a great tutor, very helpful, and super personable! He was easy to reach by phone and easy to schedule with. He helped explain both GRE math and verbal problems to me. He goes at a good pace and make sure you understand everything before he moves on. I would recommend him to anybody who is looking for help!

Excellent tutor and communicator

From my first inquiry with WyzAnt, Todd was very good at replying to my emails and phone calls to set up our appointment. He is very punctual also. But most importantly, he is a very good tutor. He is patient and is very good at explaining things to me in a way that I can understand them.
