I'm Bank Street educated and certified in both general ed and literacy, plus have almost 20 years experience tutoring students aged 5 to 19. My students have a variety of special needs, and my job is to find a way for them to become more successful in school and life. We frequently play games and do projects as a way to integrate academic skills into real life situations. Past projects include learning to crochet, doing origami, cooking, and even designing our own games. I gleefully admit that I'm also a bit of a comic book and sci-fi nerd. Going to school can be a tiring and difficult job! I work hard to make learning fun as well as productive.

In addition to working at progressive, inclusive private schools as a classroom teacher and learning specialist, I also have taken multiple special education classes both during my matriculation at Bank Street and since, in pursuit of my complete special education certification. To keep my practice up to date and strengthen my classroom skills, I took several online mini-courses with CHADD. I regularly read articles and discuss "tricks" or customized interventions with other staff and our consulting psychologist to help our students get the best advantage possible against their challenges. Also, I have fought a mild attention deficit problem all my life, which drives me to better understand the problem and try harder to help kids in a similar boat to avoid the long-term issues I've had.
Dyslexia

Dyslexia

In addition to my literacy specialty at Bank Street, I have taken separate classes on Orton-Gillingham methods and RAVE-O. I have work with multiple students both past and present, ages 7 to 15, who have had different challenges related to dyslexia, including decoding, spelling, sentence construction and organization, and comprehension (especially in subject area reading and in math). My tutoring has included children with dyslexia for the NYC Department of Ed for the past eight years (ongoing), but I had worked with similar students in a private setting previously.

Phonics

I've taken Orton-Gillingham classes, a RAVE-O workshop, and have 10 years practice using PAF and Wilson components, customized for student needs. I work as a reading specialist for first and second grades at my school, focusing on remediation. For four years, I have conducted all the reading assessments for our school to inform teachers' class instruction and keep track of class progress. For the lower grades, this often includes evaluating phonics knowledge and making recommendations for student support.

Study Skills

In addition to working for many years to overcome my own learning issues (and finally making it through to my Master's degree), I have worked for several years as a classroom teacher and learning specialist in progressive education environments where we help kids with all kinds of issues deal with the hurdles of school life. I've worked with elementary, middle school, and high school students to help them achieve more organized, efficient, and productive study routines. They also make some pretty great projects and papers.
Vocabulary

The key to education is knowing words! I strongly encourage knowledge of word roots in studying vocabulary, which will help you prepare for almost every kind of reading challenge. Insightful and pleasant

Our 1st visit with Kathleen was a success! Our daughter wants to continue learning math with her, and that's a big accomplishment for a girl who dreaded math. We look forward to ongoing lessons. Much thanks!
