I started working as a tutor in 2009, when I came back to NY from Korea. While there, I taught English, with an emphasis on test preparation. Here in NY, I have worked with a lot of kids to prepare for the Hunter High School test, as well as the SHSAT and the SAT. I keep current on the testing requirements for the various schools and the updates to the SAT. I understand how tests work and help my students to understand strategies for taking tests, as well as refreshing their knowledge of academic subjects and strengthening skill sets. Through the years of working as a tutor, I have deepened my understanding of math and English. I have helped students write papers, prepare for AP exams and study for History. I have worked with students of all ages and backgrounds. It's really thrilling to see students change and grow and I love getting the notes and phone calls when they have done well in their classes or on their tests! I feel consistently challenged and stimulated by my work as a tutor.
Like many tutors, I have other interests! I studied photography at Rochester Institute of Technology, and received a BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in Media Arts. I recently began online studies at Oxford University, where I have taken numerous philosophy and economics classes. I plan to transfer to a local university to complete my Masters degree sometime within the next few years. In the meantime, I am very busy with my art projects. I am also a photographer and Photoshop artist, I have been able to share my knowledge of these powerful tools with students through WyzAnt. Christine helped my son with testing methods and pointers. He is now using them to be better prepared for his tests.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
