I have ten years of teaching experience in elementary education. I believe learning should be fun and learning can take many forms! With the new standards students are expected to meet, learning can become overwhelming and challenging - especially with the New York State ELA and Math tests. However, tutors have the ability to work with one student and to address the needs of one student. This can open up the doors to new learning opportunities and can make learning more fun and challenging. Some students need some extra help to brush up on a certain subject, but some students need to be pushed beyond the curriculum and I am able to help with that also.
If your child needs help with test prep, reading, writing, or math, we can work together to ensure your child grows and reaches his/her full potential. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have ten years of teaching elementary education. I hold two Permanent NYS Certifications in Childhood Education (1-6) and Students with Disabilities (1-6). I have taught all subjects: Reading, Writing, Math, Social Studies and Science.
I have taught a variety of different modalities in elementary math. I have taught Every Day Math and Investigations. I use an inquiry-based method and real world examples when teaching math. I am able to teach 1st-4th grades in mathematics.
I have taught many different modules of science from the human body, forces and motion to living environments. I believe hands-on experiences are the best when teaching science as well as using real-world and relatable examples.
Grammar is very important these days - in the world of spell check and grammar checks, I feel students are losing their ability to correct their own written work. I will be able to help your child come up with strategies to help them check their own work as well as strategies to help them learn the mechanics of grammar.
Proofreading is a lost art with today's computer programs, however, handwritten work is still required and when you want to write a simple thank-you note. I will be able to help your child develop strategies that can help them proofread their own work.
Reading is embedded in every day life. Many students find reading difficult especially with the new standards in place. A reader needs to have strategies for understanding as well as tools to help him/her infer, draw conclusions, understand cause and effect and understand when an author is making an argument and backing it up with supporting details.
Spelling is so important today in a world of text messages and spell check. Understanding basic spelling principles as well as root words and phonics will help any child become a better speller.
I have been teaching elementary students for ten years and within the standard curriculum study skills are ever present. I have taught my students to study for tests and also to incorporate study habits into their everyday homework routines.
As someone who has been teaching, I have seen so many children who lack a developed vocabulary. Having the ability to choose you words wisely and having a bank to choose those words from becomes important as we progress through life. Also, some children develop their vocabulary at a slower rate than others. I can help develop vocabulary at a level that is appropriate for your child.
