Hello and welcome!

Are you looking to grow your art skills and create work that feels personal and meaningful? Need guidance preparing a visual art portfolio for admission to competitive middle school, high school, college, or graduate programs? You're in the right place!

My name is Diana Naccarato—I'm an artist, art professor, and founder of Artful and Educational. Based in New York City, I hold an MFA in Studio Art, BFA in Painting and Drawing, an Advanced Graduate Certificate in Art Education, and a Certificate in Media and Technology from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Outside the classroom, I work professionally as an exhibiting artist, participating in residencies and shows throughout NYC, across the U.S., and abroad.

I love helping students find and develop their creative voice. I specialize in foundational drawing, painting, and mixed media, and have additional experience in photography, video, and papermaking. Whether you're exploring art as a hobby or preparing for a serious portfolio review, I'm here to support your goals.

Many of the students I’ve worked with over the years are not only bright and creative—but also deeply sensitive. Some live with anxiety, ADHD, learning disabilities, or have experienced school as an overwhelming or unsupportive environment. My tutoring sessions are designed to create a calm, affirming space for students to explore their ideas, grow their confidence, and develop their creative voice. I also work with English Language Learners, offering art-themed conversation classes to build reading, writing, and speaking skills through engaging discussions about art.

If you're curious about materials, check out my Basic Drawing Supply List for beginners under the “Advice for Artists” section on my website—www.artfulandeducational.com—or we can start with supplies you already have!

Taught my child so much about becoming a better artist

Diana has really been able to teach my ten-year-old daughter how to make much better visual art than she ever made before. Diana has taught her about shading, perspective, and many, many more concepts and skills fundamental to good visual art. In a matter of a couple months, my daughter has evolved from a kid interested in art to a student of art who shows promise to develop into a talented, mature artist (in time). I showed a published professional illustrator a portrait my daughter made under Diana's tutelage and he was very, very impressed by it as a work of a ten year-old. Believe me, the pictures my daughter drew before meeting Diana would never had elicited such a reaction. Diana was a Godsend to my daughter, for which I will always be thankful.

Amazing Art Tutor!

We asked Diana to help my 17-year-old daughter prepare her portfolio for her application to art college. Diana was so supportive and was amazing to work with. She met with my daughter every week, twice a week, to make sure the portfolio was finished in time. Diana’s expertise in both art itself and in tutoring was invaluable. She was very sensitive, encouraging, and kind, and helped my daughter through what was a very stressful time. Diana was always flexible and allowed my daughter the space to develop her skills while guiding her through the process. She always went the extra step and was generous with her knowledge, time and attention. With Diana’s skilled direction my daughter created some gorgeous pieces and completed her portfolio in time, and my daughter had fun while doing so. She was admitted to her first choice art school! We owe Diana a debt of gratitude for all her support. I highly recommend Diana to anyone looking for a marvelous art tutor.

Very patient and encouraging.

She taught me the bare basics of art very well and has many insights on a lot of things. Genuinely nice person and fun to work with. Every single lesson we've had I've truly learned something I haven't before, and I get to play around with that idea she gives me, which is something I love.

Knowledgeable, friendly, inspiring.

I’m in my 30s and am looking to become more serious about making art after decades of just dabbling. In two lessons, Diana helped me home in on what my artistic voice is and how to begin honing those skills. We were able to work through some issues I was having with resin and discuss in-depth how to use found objects and images appropriately in the fine art world. I feel set up for success and will definitely use Diana again in the future if I need more support!

Knowledgeable, easy to connect with, helpful

Diana was immediately nice, approachable and knowledgeable. My class was fun and interesting. She helped me reach my initial objectives and gave me plenty to practice with before I have another session with her. I definitely recommend her!

Nice and excellent art tutor

In June, we moved from Suzhou, China to Orlando, Florida. It was during the summer vacation, kids needed fun and meaningful stuff to do. They love drawing, so we looked for a painting tutor on Wyzant, it was by pure chance that we connected with Diana. Over the next few weeks, Diana proved to be the perfect art teacher for our children. She is patient and passionate about teaching. Her lesson plans and class preparations are well-organized and meticulous. She has a unique artistic style. She knows how to adapt her teaching to each kid's level and interests. On Diana’s courses, not only did the children learn various techniques and tools, but they also gained insights into art theory and design concepts. Diana encourages kids to express their ideas, create characters and stories of them through art. I believe this is very helpful for improving their abstract thinking and expression skill. Although my children's English is poor, they had no trouble communicating with Diana, and their language skills improved as an extra benefit. We highly recommend her.
