I am passionate about teaching music composition and production (including mixing, as well as techniques of theory and history) and love helping students learn the techniques and hone the skills they need to produce the music they want to create.

Todays composers are often required to wear many hats, bringing to bear their skills as a composer, sound designer, performer, midi and audio recorder, a fluency working their DAW, as their ability to create a great final mix. Throw in a the benefits of a solid understanding of music theory and history, and you can see how producing music is truly a multi-disciplinary field.

Of course everything needs to be done at breakneck speed when working in a professional environment. My goal as an instructor is to help students see the forest from the trees, not only learning the necessary techniques but developing strategies for identifying which techniques to use for any given project and how to put it all together.

My teaching and tutoring experience goes back over 25 years, and though I now work full time at music composition and instruction, I was at one time a teacher of AP Physics and Pre-Calculus at a private high school in Santa Monica (though). I have kept in touch with a number of former students and their families, and have been praised for my energy, humor, and the ability break down tough subjects in a way that is easy to understand and enjoyable to learn.

Composition (Music)

Composition (Music)

I am a professional composer working in the field of film, television and production music. I received a daytime Emmy award in 2008 (Guiding Light) and have had my music placed on over 2700 episodes and 449 series (mostly television as well as several feature films) including American Idol, So You Think You Can Dance, Guiding Light, Catfish, The Daily Show, Keeping Up With the Kardashians and Ancient Aliens to name a few. While I love composing music, I am also passionate about working with students, having taught high school at one time (AP physics and mathematics), and having tutored students across a wide range of subjects including music production and composition.
Music Production

Music Production

As a professional composer for film, television, and other commercial productions, I have produced and delivered over 1000 works of music for commercial use, including several feature films, as well as placements on over 2700 episodes (mostly television) including American Idol, So You Think You Can Dance, Guiding Light, Catfish, The Daily Show, Keeping Up With the Kardashians and Ancient Aliens to name a few. Working on the daytime soap Guiding Light, I produced and delivered music on a weekly basis (for which I received a Daytime Emmy award in 2008). I am well versed in all aspects of music production including sound design and selection, the compositional process, creating charts and recording musicians, integrating additional audio elements, mixing, mastering, and the delivery of a polished final product to clients within specific budgets and deadlines. The world of commercial music production is dependent upon meeting creative expectations while working within tight budgets and deadlines. As an example, I was asked by the producers of So You Think You Can Dance to compose and produce a song on one afternoon, and the following evening I watched my song broadcast on primetime TV. Developing a process that works for you is crucial to meeting tight deadlines. There is nothing I enjoy more than helping students understand the process of commercial music production and watching them gain the skills necessary to bring their music to life. I teach the craft of music production — techniques that work across music software platforms — emphasizing a focus on one’s creative vision and how to achieve that result.
